I know how to use the channel list to select channels (From TiVo Central, select Messages & Settings; then Settings; then Channels; then Channel List.)
What I want to know if there is a way to be tuned to a channel, and remove it from the list. I am asking this since I was to be able to update the list in real-time, rather than toggling back and forth between live TV and the channel list. If the channel list would show what is currently on the channel, that would work just as well.
I have a Tivo HD.
Thanks in advance

I know of no other way to remove channels from the list other than what you said in your first sentence. Personally I wouldn't want to be able to remove a channel while watching live TV as there's too much of a chance for accidental removal. Now if you're in the guide then that would be a great feature.

If you are not familiar with all the channel abbreviations, then browse the guide and write down the channels you want to remove. Then uncheck them from your Channels List.
The Channels List is the only means to remove channels from the guide.

I'm with you Snash. I think it would be a very cool software improvement to allow users to select or unselect channels while actually viewing them. Its a pain to switch back and forth.
After I went through all the switching back and forth to eliminate the channels I don't care to see (geez, how many CSPANs and HSNs does one really need???) I wrote down all of my keepers and now keep the paper under the DVR. Should I need to re-setup the Tivo in the future it will take much less time (and skipping around) to set the channels I really want to see.

A quicker way to toggle, if you didn't do this already, would be to go the Channels List, then press Live TV. Then you can change channels a few times, determine if you want/need them. Then press Left Arrow to jump back into the Channels List screen and mark them accordingly. Then drop to Live TV and repeat until you've got it set up the way you want it.

Good stuff! I'm embarrassed I didn't figure that one out. Filing that in my folder.... <<tech-tip 481: Quick Toggle for Channels List setup....>> My tech tips folder is thick enough now I don't need a television stand.;)

That is an improvement. (Too bad when it jumps back to the first page of the Channels List screen.)
Thanks!

Yeah, you just have to punch in the channel number to jump back down in the list to where you were.
