I have many files (home movies, etc) converted to MP4 format for use on an apple tv. Is there any plan on Tivo allowing these files to be used? I'd love to dump my home movies onto my tivo in this format. Thanks.

The TivoHD hardware supports MPEG-4 decoding, but the current software does not.
I think there's a good chance that TiVo will add that capability in the future, but your guess is as good as mine as to when that will happen.

Why would you want to dump them onto your Tivo? You can easily stream the movies from your PC to your ATV so that they do not take up any space on the ATV.

If Tivo allowed folder organization, then it would just be a matter of convenience. My goal is still to have only one box.

That would be nice. I ended up choosing to rip my DVD library to ATV format because of the ability to stream (having folders would be nice though). Even if Amazon Unbox does eventually offer HD movies, I know the Tivo could never replace the ATV completely.

Till that happens, you can get a Popcornhour A-100 that runs diskless and silent and will play almost everything (including H.264/P4) you throw at it- for $180.

I've got two of these at home. They're pretty neat, although I expect it will take a few more months of firmware updates to work out all the major bugs.

TiVo Desktop 2.6 Plus due out this month should in fact support HD conversion as well as transfering MP4 in HD as well.
It is also reported that it will support folders as well.
Lets just see how good it might be

I might even have to spend the money on 2.6 plus. I've never bothered with 2.5 plus since I could always run the video file through a "free" converter and then transfer it over. The thought of transferring mp4 in HD is very intriguing.

Has anyone been able to transfer MPEG 4 to Tivo?

I moved a couple of video podcasts over that I dl'ed from iTunes and I am pretty sure that they are in mp4. I'll have to check later when I get home.

My portable player is a COWON A2 which only supports mp4 theirfore I have a large collection of mp4 video. I transfered over (using Tivo Destkop Plus 2.5.1) Aladin and it was unwatchable (audio was all out of sync and looping).
I'm trying the transfer again to retest...plus I will play the mp4 on Windows using VLC to check it.

There's not a single quote anywhere that says it will support folders (like we want it to - when viewing the NPL of a PC). It appears it will only support folders like it does today, which is adding folder shortcuts, but it still flattens the directory out when viewing the NPL. It also appears it will support sending folders from the PC to the Tivo, which will then show up as a folder on the Tivo NPL, but that's still not folders in the TD NPL.
At least that's how I read the official announcements from Tivo, and the couple of articles out there. If you see something different, please post it!

It confirms that it's not supported, if that's what you mean.

I guess for me it's much more important to be able to have folders on the Tivo side. If the Tivo supported streaming then I could see a reason to want them on the PC side. Atleast it's a start, maybe next time it will be on the PC side.
