forgive my ignorance but could somebody give me a quick explanation of who John Adams is and why I would want to watch 7 hours about him?

Yes, an extra. Depending on what got cut, I could be in as many as 8 scenes.....

You'll have to change your caption to 'previously not pictured'. :) Congrats on the scenes your in. There are no small parts only small actors.

Other than being the 2nd President.....I really don't remember anything about him. I figure there must be something to him to devote 7 hours to.

Yes, I'll try to point them out as it approaches (I haven't seen episode descriptions yet). I am a wounded victim of the Boston Massacre, a Boston Tea-partier, a Senator at GW's inauguration....the other scenes I'm likely buried in a crowd.
Still no word about the release of that other movie "Lake City" which started this whole "Extras" chapter of my life ;)

Yeah, all that history stuff is pretty top secret.

So, our suicide is almost 200 years late so far. Let's keep that going.

The original John Adams wasn't that exciting but in this version he's a cyborg from the future come back to free America from the British using sonic screwdrivers and some mysterious black tar.
Sorry for the spoilers

Actually, that was the BBC version. The American remake, I hear, isn't quite so historically literal.

It doesn't start until the 16th according to the OP. Should be showing up in the Guide Data shortly.

No, no, no, John Adams was Samuels' brother and was uncredited as the real inventor of micro-brew beer. :)
HBO is really scrapping the "barrel" for new content.

Hey any idea why I can't find this in my Tivo guide so I can record it? Just curious...I checked mine (DirecTivo) and while I have a little bit of guide data for HBO on 3/16 the 8PM slot is showing TBA right now. Probably will be there tomorrow.

Just watch it, he's fascinating. Everyone around him was fascinating. There's also been a bunch of books out about him lately (so you can read if you'd rather do that than watch). I don't know how they'll cram it all into 7 episodes (just the stuff with Jefferson could easily take up that much).
I'm just wondering how HBO is going to handle it with their typical everyone slutting around and cursing all the time. Works for their typical shows, but John Adams, not so sure!

That goes for me too. I'll bet most people are the same. To prove it, ask people you work with tell you what they know about John Adams. I'm betting most won't tell you a thing other than he was president.

Which, quite frankly, is sad. We as a society our losing sense of our history and our value of education. John Adams was an incredible figure in history, and I'm sure this will be an enticing seven episodes of television.

Overall, and contrary to a lot of misplaced nostalgia, this country is better-educated than ever. (Which isn't to say that it couldn't be a lot better... just that the golden age of the past is imaginary.)

That perhaps over-simplifies it. More people--FAR more people--are educated now than in the past. But the education that educated people get is generally far worse than in the past.

Other possible reasons:
HBO (which has done some excellent mini-series events in the past).
Exec-produced by: Tom Hanks (who has done some excellent work in conjunction with HBO in the past...)

Wow, can anyone confirm if this is true???

“This morning, my kids and I decided to watch a TiVo HD recording we made last night of The Making of John Adams. This is the new upcoming mini-series by Tom Hanks and others about the lives and accomplishments of John Adams. When we started watching it, I first found that the TiVo had flagged it for mandatory auto-deletion within a few hours of being deleted, due to ‘copyright policies.’ Hmm – never saw that one before.
After about 5 minutes watching, my oldest son came into the room, and we decided to start it over so he could enjoy it. What I found was something I’ve never seen before and has me pretty frosted. When I backed up to the beginning and attempted to watch it again, TiVo would not allow me to - again stating that it had violated copyright policies. After countless attempts at forward and reverse moves, we found that we could now not watch any portion of the show! I rebooted the TiVo, and found the same thing. No can do - the TiVo/HBO/Comcast programming had locked it from being viewed again! Then as promised at 11:29am EST, it deleted from my hard drive and there was nothing I could do about it.

Specifically, this is based on the work "John Adams" by David McCollough. Probably because of the expected popularity, the book's out in paperback now. It's a thick book! I read it a couple of summers ago & it really changed a lot of my feelings about our Founding Fathers. Thomas Jefferson gets a much more press but wasn't anywhere near as committed to the process as Adams. He has another book, 1776, published in 2006 that covers the broader story in depth. That'll be my reading this summer, I think.
This show's almost enough to make me pony up the payment to Comcast for HBO. Tom Hanks takes his work seriously.

That sounds like it was a glitch on the part of the local cable company (mis-setting a tag)...

I had no problems starting/stopping/restarting/etc. the first episode. It didn't delete at midnight AND I didn't see any messages that it would do so. FWIW.
ETA: whoops sorry: I see they're talking about the "Making Of" not the series itself. I didn't record that so I don't know.

No problems here either with a copy protection flag or time limit. I didn't see any icon, or get any warning (Tivo HD, HD recording, TWC Orange County, cablecard)
