I just upgraded to Tivo HD. For a while after set up, I thought I wasn't getting sound. Then I hit right arrow and it came back immediately and very clear. I was getting Tivo sounds just fine. The sound is getting recorded however. I can rewind and hear it after I hit right arrow or info, etc and it's there in the recording (after hitting one of those buttons). The channel is coming in clearly. There is no pixelation. It just seems to be a bug. Anyone else? I'm running system 8.1 and am connected to my TV via HDMI with DD 5.1 selected. Selecting PCL doesn't change anything, nor does any other sound option. I've recycled power from the plug and restarted with no help.
The sound goes away again after changing channels or 8-second-back. Same remedy. It's a pain.
My CableCards haven't arrived yet. Will that fix? Any help would be appreciated.

You'll soon be upgraded to 9.2. Maybe that will fix it?

If you are using the speakers in your TV, you should set audio output to PCM. Less than 1% of TVs support Dolby Digital. The TiVo does its best to detect when a device needs PCM, but it's not 100%.
Let us know if you still see the problem under software 9.2a with PCM selected.

Nope. I'm using an a/v receiver for audio. Whey I typed PCL, I meant PCM above. Thanks though!

FYI:
With Dolby Digital selected, you will not get TiVo sounds while on DD2.0 and DD5.1 channels. The TiVo has no way to inject their sounds into a Dolby Digital bitstream.

Just a semi related question, I have my TiVo HD set to Dolby Digital and I have never been on a channel without TiVo sounds. Why is this?
Edit: Reading bkdtv's post, is it because my tv is telling the tivo that it doesnt support Dolby?

TVs are supposed communicate what they can do over HDMI. That will override the Audio setting. However, not all TVs communicate this information properly, and it is those situations where people need to set the output to PCM to eliminate pops and other noises with their TV speakers.

Well, I got the upgrade to 9.2. It still had the problem so I restarted the TiVo and when it came back up everything was fine. Great!
Not so. After I let it sit a while uninterrupted, it started doing the same thing all over again.

Okay, one more thing to add: I found out that it was the Tivo sound effects bringing back the sound to my receiver. Turned 'em off and it stayed quiet. However, the sound is getting TO the TV via HDMI. It's just not coming back unless a Tivo sound effect brings it back, except for 8-secs-back which makes the Tivo sound, but doesn't bring back program noise. Sound comes back from TV to receiver by digital coax.
I know the Tivo sounds aren't in DD5.1 which must have something to do with it. Anymore ideas?
Thanks!

Final note:
Although my HDMI DVD player has no problems whatsoever of moving sound to the TV and then to my receiver, the Tivo does. But when I connected my Tivo audio output to the receiver via an optical cable, I experienced no more problems. HDMI still goes to the TV for video and I'm not experiencing any syncing issues.
I still don't know if the problem is in the TV or the Tivo, but this is a solution I can live with. Thanks for all your suggestions.
