I just installed my new TiVo. I have it connected to the phone line because I'm not sure which wireless I can use. Right now I have cable for my computer and a Linksys wireless G router that works very well. Can I buy a wireless USB adapter to plug into the TiVo and will it work? Or, do I have to buy the one TiVo makes? Would like to be able to buy a Linksys if I thought it would work. Would appreciate some help. Thanks

Tivo only supports their own USB wireless adaptor. Fortunately, you can buy it discounted and with free shipping on amazon.com.

You can buy a wireless bridge (any make/model that works with your wireless network) and connect it to the ethernet port on the tivo, but that's usually a more expensive option. (There are ways to do it for around the same price, if you're willing to find something that will run dd-wrt firmware and flash it, then configure it as a wireless bridge, etc, but purpose built wireless bridges are not as much of a commodity item as a regular router, so the purpose-built bridge is a more expensive option. On the other hand, if you happen to have one, it will work just fine.)

I would just go with the Tivo USB wireless adapter if you can't use a wired connection. It's a good device and works well and will always be supported by Tivo. Two of my three tivos use the Tivo USB adapter. The other one is connected to a wireless bridge (along with lots of other devices) via a switch in my home office.

Tivo only supports their own USB wireless adapter with the TivoHD. You can use certain other adapters with an S2 or S3

www.tivo.com/adapters

Only the Tivo Wireless Adapter will support WPA.

IIRC, only the Tivo adapter works on the S3.

They claim its not support for the S3, but I used a Netgeer WG111 wireless adapter on my S3 for over a year without any problems. I switched to the TiVo banded adapter when they enabled transfers on the S3 for version 9.2. The other non-TiVo adapters with the right versions are almost impossible to find.

So when you say you used the Netgear for over a year, but you switched, I guess it can be assumed that the Netgear adapter "worked" for communicating with the Tivo service for updates, but did not work for home networking?

IIRC, only the Tivo adapter works on the S3.

http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/10/23/tivo-hd-vs-series3/

Checkout the table under "Accessories
Support 3rd party WiFi adapters and external drive.

I don't know if it is accurate, but I've seen that repeated many times.

The Netgear adapter worked great for everything. I used it for two months after the 9.2 software update for MRV and TTG transfers. The reason I switched to the TiVo adapter was for the supposed faster transfer speeds. I only noticed a small improvement in the transfer speed after I made the switched. But the Netgear adapter worked without any problems.
