About 2 days ago, my HR10-250 started rebooting, and is now in a continuous reboot loop. I've read the threads that new software updates may cause reboots, but I can't even get into the settings menu to check what version I have, and if I've gotten an upgrade.

Is this likely a software issue, or my hard drive biting the dust? I'm able to get through all the start up screens, and as soon is it acquires the complete signal, it teases me with about 1 second of TV, and then reboots.

Is there anything I can do?

Got all the makings of a hard drive problem to me.

Try to reinstall the image on startup (pause,5,2)

Last resort would be a clear & delete everything-

Hard drives are cheap these days, and for a $20 Instantcake image, you'll be back in business in no time.

Thanks codespy

Managed to get the thing working long enough to do a complete clear and delete reboot. Happening right now, so we'll see if that helps.

machine now seems to be hung on the "clearing and deleting everything..."
screen. It's been over two hours - do I let it keep going, or pull the plug?

Before I had to replace the unit anyway, I did a C & D E, and it took well over 24 hours, something like 26 or 28 hours. Not uncommon for a failing hard drive to take much longer.

Yes, sometimes it can take over a day, especially if there were significant amount of recordings.

took about 6 hours, but my machine is back up and running again, with no reboots in the last 24 hours. Not sure what the problem was, but this seemed to fix it. Kind of a pain to reprogram all my season passes, but better than having to get rid of my beloved Tivo.

Thanks for all the advice.

"Try to reinstall the image on startup (pause,5,2)"

What does this do specifically?

What is the image and where does it come from?

I thought you needed to load a new image onto the drive by hooking it up to a computer and use software, etc?

Well, all good things must come to an end. After about a day or two of good performance, my system is now back to rebooting.

I'm thinking it's time to upgrade to the DirecTV DVR, as much as I'm dreading it. I can't see putting another hundred or so bucks into getting a new hard drive + the InstantCake software for this, given that it's eventually going to be obsoleted by DirecTV anyway. Maybe I'll take a look at Comcast...

OK - so, my HR10-250 went back to continuous reboots after a couple of days of working. I figured I would try replacing the hard drive, so I bought a brand new one, and used InstantCake to get it back and running.

Exact same problem. My box reboots continuously, and it's impossible to mess with any settings, because I never have time before it reboots again.

This is too much of a coincidence to be hardware failure, since I replaced the most obvious failure point (the drive), and this all started happening after 6.3f was installed.

Should I go ahead and use InstantCake 3.1? Anyone have any other suggestions? Seems like 6.3f caused more problems than it fixed for most folks. But, I'm really in a bind here! I miss my Tivo!

Help!

Perhaps it is the power supply.

So, an update to my Saga...

Thinking the problem might be 6.3f (never had the problem with 6.3e), I reloaded 6.3e onto my new hard drive, and put it back in. Still having re-boots, but now also having hang-ups, where it just gets stuck.

My unit seems to be totally fried.

Summary of my problem.

1. Unit started continuously rebooting around the time it upgraded to 6.3f
2. Bought new hard drive and installed InstantCake 6.3f - still having the same problem
3. Loaded 6.3e onto the new harddrive, still having problems.

Ready to give up. What are the symptoms of a power supply failure? I've already dumped over $100 into fixing this box with the new hard drive and instant cake. I'm hesitant to drop another $70 for a new power supply on the hope that it solves it.

May be time to retire by beloved HR10-250. I love this box - does everything I need. I was planning to hang on as long as DirecTV sends me signals on it.
