Okay, the first TiVoHD with the upgraded drive is working out well, so I decided to set up the 2nd TiVoHD last night. The lifetime activation took after about 5 reboots, but I've yet to see any channels through either my Cable, Cable with CableCARD, or OTA antenna.
I'm using the same cables I had the first THD hooked up to, but the box always hangs (I haven't waited more than 60 minutes yet) on the Beginning Channel Scan screen. This is regardless of whether I'm setting it up for Cable & Antenna or Antenna only.
I've also tried multiple reboots without any success of getting the software updated past the 8.1.7 it shipped with. I wanted to get the software updated before calling the cable company to activate the CableCARD.
Any advice please?

I thought I should add that I've been able to get to TiVo Central and thus the System Information page only by going through the Guided Setup for Cable only. I don't get any Channel Guide information, but at least it brings me to the main menu.
When I get home tonight I'm planning on swapping out all the cables just in case something happened to one of them while detaching and reattaching, but I'm highly skeptical about anything in that area.
Also, I have the original drive from our first THD. Should I take a chance on swapping the new THD's drive out for the first one? (seems a bit risky for a unit that's under warranty and might need it)
If a software update might solve my problems, is there a way to force the update or is the only way to keep doing reboots? What's more effective - a hard reboot (power removed) or a soft reboot (through menu)?

I just went through 3 days of a TivoHD/Verizon FIOS cable card installation.
The same thing was happening, the channel scan never completed. Finally a "Cold reset" (according to the installer), caused the card to work. And when it worked, the screen with the spinning doo-dad didn't even come up. It went directly to channel 49, the highest "basic" channel. The higher numbered channels came in a little later. This "cold reset" is not the same as "initialize" or "activate". However, the 2nd card worked right away without needing the "cold reset".

I have an idea what might be causing my problems.
I inserted the CableCARD prior to plugging TiVoHD in for the first time. I figured I could just bypass anything relating to the CC by initially setting up for Antenna only.
Maybe what I need to do is pull the CC out and run through guided setup all over again.
Thoughts?

There's about a 99% chance you just need to get the software updated and all will be fine. The software that it came with is quite buggy.

Rebooting the system doesn't get you new software. You have to make connections to the service and when your status is Pending Restart, then you reboot the system.

I just heard from home that the CableCARD has been activated and all the channels are coming in, despite the software still being on 8.7.1.Rebooting the system doesn't get you new software. You have to make connections to the service and when your status is Pending Restart, then you reboot the system. That's what I was looking for - thanks!
The Connect to Service option apparently isn't available until 2am, so I'll see what happens when I return home.
