For those not too familiar with the show or the term "couch gag", it's the opening sequence of the show that's always the same until the family is about to sit on the couch, at which point something usually happens to one or all of them.

Mine is the one that shows Homer evolving...

What's yours?

Would anyone believe that I have never seen an entire episode of The Simpsons? How about South Park, or ATHF, Futurama or any other prime time cartoon. I love Animaniacs and Tiny Toons though. So I have no idea what the couch gag is on Simpsons. :o

Did you check out the YouTube clip I posted? You don't have to know anything about the show to understand what's going on...though there are some jokes that only the regular viewer would get like some of the dinosaurs are based on characters in the show. And Moe Syzlak devolving is particularly funny if you are familiar with what a scum bucket he is.

I'm not sure it's my favorite, but it's the first one that came to mind, since I just saw it on Sunday night. It's the one where the camera continues pulling back from Springfield, to the US, to the Earth, to the Galaxy, to the Universe, eventually coming through the layers of skin and emerging on the outside of Homer's head, as the family is sitting on the couch. Homer says "Weird."

I like that one too. I was trying to find the video for it but gave up. I think it is like the one from the movie Contact.

The power of ten and the evolution gags were the best in my opinion.

I hope someday - and I'm sure someone will tell me its already been done - they will release a DVD of nothing BUT the couch gags :)

The one where they come into the living room and it's all Escher-style with stairways all leading at crazy angles.

The "Contact" homage is up there on my list, but I prefer the couch gags to be short snapshots. That "Contact" one goes on and on like a Family Guy chicken fight.

But my favorite is the M.C. Escher "Relativity" parody. It happens at 2:08 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCPD8rsz-Nk) in the YouTube link.

Yes, I know Futurama did it first. :)

Not a 'couch gag' but I also like the 'A Picture a Day for 39 years' video of Homer in 'Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind'

how about the one that replicates a tivo "delete this program?" screen?

My son actually thought I was about to delete the show when it came on!!

My favorite was about a decade ago, when they extended it seemingly forever as if they were trying to get onto AOL using dialup - the music just kept vamping on and on and on...

I wish I had kept watching the Simpsons. I think I quit back when X-Files went off the air. :(

You should jump back in, it's not like there's some story arc that you have to get caught up on :) I will admit though that the last couple of seasons haven't been the best.

Here in Atlanta they show reruns twice a day on the "MyTv" network (the new channel that was created when UPN and WB merged).

I keep waiting for someone on The Simpsons to say "South Park already did it" :D.

I hadn't seen the movie yet when I watched this episode, but I understood it was in reference to the movie when I saw Homer's "summer love" spider-pig.

This is my second favorite one, it was very well done.

That one actually fooled me for a second when I first saw it.

Okay, this is old school. It's from way back in my college days, in the early '90's.

But there was one where when the family runs in, the Flintstones & the Rubbles are sitting on the couch, & the Simpsons appear confused & stunned. And Fred just raises up his hand like "What?"

That one sent a dorm room full of people into a tizzy!!!! It was great!

Ah, simpler times. :)

That was the first one that I thought of as well.

I liked the one where the family ran into the living room only to discover the pawnshop owner and gimp from "Pulp Fiction", who proceed to go medieval on Homer's a$$.

I like the one where they put the live action version on the front of an ep. (that one was the full "lead in").
I also liked the Flintsones one already mentioned.
