I have been using Directv TIVO SD for about 4-5 years. I am buying a new HD TV and want to upgrade to a HD. Directv with HD doesn't support TIVO, and once I used a Directv DVR and it was such garbage that I am affraid to get the Directv HD Dvr.

? If I switch my TIVO for a Directv HD DVR, is it even reasonalbly close to TIVO or will I hate it?

? I have comcast internet. Does Comcast offer a real TIVO HD or is it a Comcast DVR?

? I really want HD in 2 rooms and have a lot of space with dual channels. What should I do?

Thanks - All recommendations are appreciated.

Are you in New England? Comcast Tivo is only available in New England.

I loved my DirecTV TiVos, but I couldn't upgrade to their HD-DVR b/c of line-of-sight issues with the HD satellites. So I recently switched to Comcast with their TiVo.

It is a Comcast HD DVR and you can opt to have the Tivo software installed on it (if you live in New England). The Comcast DVR with TiVo has only 20hrs of storage and so far it is not expandable/upgradable. It is the real TiVo interface and you'll find it easy to navigate, but I've had real problems with mine. It's very buggy and the performance is very slow. Hopefully, those things will get fixed soon, but I wouldn't recommend it right now. The only thing going for it, really, is that you don't have to shell out $300 up front to get the familiar and freindly interface.

If you want to have multi-room viewing and expandable storage, then cable or Fios with 2 TiVoHDs is the way to go. The TiVoHD is only 20hrs, but you can upgrade the hard drive or attach an external drive. If you don't need multi-room viewing, but you do want larger drive/expandable storage, you could also go with either DirecTV or DishNetwork DVRs. (Dish's does support multiroom viewing in a way - you can run one HD and one SD TV off of one DVR.)

you can buy a tivo outright and subscribe to both cable and the tivo service and you will be set!

I have an HD Tivo with Comcast and it works great.

What is FIOS?

FIOS is Verizon's competition for Cable. They bring Fiber Optic directly to the House. Their service brings telephone, Broadband internet, and TV. I have heard rumor that their TV programming is from DirecTV. It is currently available in limited areas as they roll it out.
