Help. I noticed the other day that I could not record 2 programs at once on the HR21. I initially thought I might have bumped one of my cables loose when installing the PS3 in the cabinet, but no, after some quick testing, I can swap out cables from ln1 to ln2 and still only have "tuner1" active. Tuner 2 shows 0 signal for all satellites and transponders. Since I have verified its not the cable, or the multiswitch (I assume that if it was, when I swapped cables, tuner 1 would go dead and tuner 2 would go live) that it is a bad HR21. In the old SD TIVO days you had to "activate" the second tuner and just want to make sure that is not true on the HR21.
Anything I am missing or is it time to call in my protection program?

Try resetting it. Then unplug and restart it. Last try red button reset.
I've never had this happen, but have heard reset would work.

Have you reset the HR21 yet? The reason I ask is if the tuner is disabled even if you connect a good cable it will not enable until you reboot.

i will try a red button reset tonight. the cable verification is still valid, since it does end up picking up a signal after the swap though. (just like loosing signal during a storm)
Red button here I come!

Dont red button reset if at all possible for it is recommend that you use the red button as a last resort if you are able to do a menu reset that is the preferred method for it is a safe shutdown of everything instead of just a sudden stop.

I stand corrected. safe reboot from menus here I come! :)
thanks for all the advice...keeping my fingers crossed. I really do not want to have to go on a crash viewing program to clear my old recordings before I call in a repair. (thanks to the writers strike there is only 11 heros to watch and a scatering of discovery HD content that will repeat 100 times in the next month!)

That happened to my HR20. I knew from reading the forums that one tuner was blown and I'd need a new DVR, but it took the service guys nearly all day at my house trying different things before they finally came to the same conclusion. HR21 replacement has been pretty stable.
I've asked numerous people at DirecTV about the red button thing, they all say it's safe to press and don't worry about it.

Of course it is. It's a safe bet that you are correct about that. It is just as safe to push the red button as it is to hold the power button in on your computer to get it to reboot. Even safer, since you don't have to worry about saving anything first.
Does anyone really think the HD DVR would be designed with a button which customers have easy access to that would actually cause more problems if they should push it in the interests of fixing other problems?
