With basic TiVo Desktop (free) you can transfer *.tivo files back to the TiVo or transfer properly formatted MPEG-2 files from the PC to the TiVo.
With TiVo Desktop Plus ($25) you can transfer many more different types of files to the TiVo. The Money unlocks codecs that allows the program to convert the shows to properly formatted MPEG-2 on the fly as the file is being sent to the TiVo.

I use Windows Media Player or Media Center Player. My HP had all the necessary codecs already installed and things play back just fine. You may need codecs, it depends on what is already installed on your computer. If you have trouble, come back and people here will gladly help you sort it out.

i'm on win xp home with all the updates applied as well i have the latest version of windows media player but media player complains that there is a problem when i try to play a show from the tivo.
i found a free pack of codecs for windows which i'll install tonight. and see if that fixes my problem.
another question i have is: with Desktop Plus can i transfer to my IPOD nano (latest version of nano) or just the nano classic?

Plus supports iPods. I use it to convert for my 60G iPod with video (I guess it is a classic, now that the touch is out) and it works very well. I don't know about nanos, so can't say for sure if they work or not. I think if there was a problem there would be lots of complaints, but I have never seen one, so I suspect it will be fine.

I downloaded from snapfiles.com
Windows Essentials Codec Pack - http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/essentials-codec-pack/essentials-codec-pack.html
and now i can transfer my shows. Think i'll go for Plus.
thanks all.
