Recently DirecTV enabled the ability for remote (via internet) recording on their receivers.
Are there any plans to allow this functionality on the DirecTiVos?
I have several that I still use and would love to see this functionality with DirecTiVo:
I have:
HR10-250
Philips DSR704
Hughes GXCEBOT
Hughes HSN HDRV2
I thought I read someplace, mid last year, that this was coming to DirecTiVos.
Is this true, or something I dreamed.
Thanks,
Rob

Anything coming out of DirecTV for this? Instead of having to install third party software.
Thanks,
Rob

Here is the press release (http://www.tivo.com/abouttivo/pressroom/pressreleases/2007/pr2007-07-31.html) which outlines what its likely you heard about:
DIRECTV to Introduce Additional TiVo Features
EL SEGUNDO and ALVISO, Calif. — July 31, 2007 — DIRECTV, Inc. (NYSE:DTV), the nation's leading satellite television service provider, and TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR), will develop a software upgrade to enhance the user experience for DIRECTV customers who have DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo® service built on the Series2™ platform.
Launching in early 2008, the new software download will provide these customers with DVR enhancements offered with the TiVo service, including a Recently Deleted Folder and Overlap Protection™, as well as DIRECTV's Remote Booking feature. In addition, DIRECTV and TiVo will continue to explore ways to bring future enhancements to DIRECTV customers with TiVo receivers.
"It is important to us that our customers with TiVo service also have access to the latest DVR technology and we look forward to exploring additional opportunities with TiVo," said Derek Chang, executive vice president, Content Strategy and Development for DIRECTV, Inc.
"DIRECTV's launch of these additional features underscores the uniqueness of TiVo's DVR service," said Naveen Chopra, vice president, Corporate Development and Strategy for TiVo. DIRECTV and TiVo began their relationship in 2000 with the launch of the first DIRECTV DVR with TiVo. In April 2006, both companies announced an extension of their commercial and advertising relationship through early 2010.
Its not clear what that implementation will actually look like, but my guess is that the remote scheduling feature will be implemented in a way that will allow you to log into your account on DIRECTV's web site and that your scheduling changes will be pushed to the unit through the satellite.
What RBTRAVIS mentioned earlier is correct, but it is a different approach in that GOTOMYDVR allows you to directly access your unit through a web browser. But the unit must be modified, so that it is running our specialized software, and connected to your home network, so that it can talk to the GOTOMYDVR server. Clearly, that is not really a mainstream alternative to what was announced, but it is interesting to the more technically inclined, and those who have had networked units for the last several years through hacking...

As for gotomydvr.com, I found this unusable. The installation instructions do not mention a required software fix for 6.3 users (I had to discover it in the long forum thread) and, once installed, it eats 70-80% of the available CPU cycles just waiting for a connection. There was no fix for this last I looked. Thanks but no thanks.
The DirecTV Remote Booking service is already available for some HR20 models and HR21 is coming soon. Indeed, you do it through the DirecTV web site's TV listing pages. Once you select a show from the listing, there's an option to record to your DVR. Select that and there's a dropdown box where you can select which of your DVRs you want to use.
It sends the request over the satellite. For the DirecTV models that are connected to the Internet, an acknowledgment is received and you then get an email. For the DTiVos, that will not be available.

Are you 100% sure this is how it works? ALL models, regardless of whether they are connected to the internet or not, are not actually sending an acknowledgment. The e-mail is ONLY acknowledging D* sent the request to the DVR, NOT that it actually received the request & scheduled it. So, it makes no difference whether it's a Tivo unit or not - they'll all work the same.
If you look at the other sites, that all how they are saying it works...

Steve,
Thx for pointing out that CPU usage issue; I'd forgotten about that. Just in looking at my own unit running 6.3, it does chew about 50% of the CPU cycles, but doesn't seem to impact performance of the unit at all. So I'd stop short of calling it unusable, but I can certainly understand why you'd shy away from it. In any case, its a good reminder that I need to look into that further; I know that SteveT fixed that with a modified client, and I should look into testing it. As for the http_get bug that got introduced with 6.3, I'll look into that too - and at least documented in the first post of the thread.

100% sure? No. But I have read on "the other site" that this is how it works. That opinions differ is to be expected, especially for a new service such as this.
I don't see the point in the email when you already got an ack on the web site that the request was made.

No. Should be part of the same update that provides Remote Scheduling.
