Yes I've read through some prior topics but none directly address all of my questions so here goes.... :)
I used to have 2 Directv/Tivo combo units circa 1999-2000 that I used for awhile until we dropped Directv and went with Time Warner cable in Kansas City so that I could get high speed internet.
We've been "renting" 2 different Time Warner cable boxes for the last few years, one is SD the other HD. Quite frankly the software sucks, they took away features in an "upgrade" last year because TW lost the license to the software they were using and we have to reset our boxes from time to time due to lockups, etc.
A neighbor said he was using a new Tivo HD box and a cable card from Time Warner and receiving/recording HD channels and only paying $1.99/mo for the cable card and he signed up with a lifetime Tivo subscription. I don't think my old lifetime subscriptions will transfer over so I assume that I could buy a lifetime for any new Tivo HD box correct?
I still need high speed internet or I would drop cable altogether.
I was reading some other topics that Time Warner is rolling out something called SDV which evidently isn't compatible with Tivo? I don't know if it has been rolled out in our area, but if it gets rolled out does that make my Tivo HD box useless for HD channels?
Right now we pay something like $5.99 mo for the SD box, $9.99/mo for the HD box and DVR service, so if I purchase a Tivo HD box with lifetime and only pay $2/mo to the cable company to use the cable cards I figure in a few years I comeout ahead and I enjoy the Tivo software as opposed to the crappy TW software.
However, I don't want to do this and lose HD if TW goes to SDV in my area. I also don't think directv is the answer due to need high speed cable?
