View Full Version : Philips HDR 112 and Sony SVR2000-lifetime unrecognized?

I bought both of these units thru ebay and just got them. The person got the philips from did not know if it even worked as it did not come with a cord. It does work, and according to the system info has a lifetime subscription. The philips was manufactured in 1999, and the Sony in 2000.
(I don't know about the sony yet as I don't have a remote right now that will work with it).
The philips does not seem to be able to call in. That is 1 problem I have yet to solve. I did call Tivo with the unit number so it could be added to my account. They said I could purchase a lifetime for $399.00. So the question I have right now is - why aren't they recognizing the lifetime subscription (I would assume basic). The unit had not been plugged in since some time in 2000, by the way.
They told me that the only units that automatically came w/basic lifetime were Toshiba and Pioneer.
Is this true? Is there any way that they will recognize the lifetime status that my Philips 112 shows it has?

You need to get the unit to call in to re-establish the lifetime service on the unit, otherwise TiVo does not know if the unit is still working or not.

Yes, I believe it is true, and those are units with an integrated DVD player. Read the first paragraph on the link below.

thanks for your response. I'll be messing around with those units this wknd and hopefully I'll be able to get it to call in. I'll post results whenever something happens.
One other quick question - it looked like there was an option to have the unit go back to factory settings. Would that help, or would I possibly mess up something (ie the lifetime) by doing that?

I owned a Philips TiVo machine, and, yes, it had a lifetime service plan. It was transferred to a Humax DVR model when the Philips hard drive failed. Then, soon after the "new" Humax DVR TiVo machine was acquired, it too failed and TiVo ported the lifetime service plan to my Series 2 model. Whoever told you that Philips models did not have lifetime service plans as an option told you incorrectly.

Could be that it got transferred off too. You would have to make it call in and see if Lifetime shows up on the box still. My guess is that it was traansferred off.
If the modem is not working you could try a PPP connection or a TivoNet/TurboNet card.

Basic?
If Tivo doesn't recognize that it has a lifetime subscription, it may not. It could have been transfered to a S2, S3 or Tivo HD and because it can't dial in, the displayed status of it's subscription has never changed. It could also be that it's dropped out of the system because it hasn't called in during the past six months. A "daily" call would fix that.

When you say "automatically" are you under the impression that 'TiVo Basic' is something that can be purchased for other Tivos? It's not. The Toshiba and Pioneer dvd units were the only ones that ever had the 'Tivo Basic' service. It was built into the purchase price of those Tivos. It was not an option for any other Tivo.

Don't do anything like that until you can get it to call in. There are options that would require you to go through the guided setup, and if you can't call in, you'd be stuck in it. The only way out of guided setup is to finish the process.

Nobody told him that or anything remotely similar.

I had been under the impression that series 1 tivos all came with a basic lifetime built in, if manufactured prior to 2003. I had spent days reading posts in this community and specifically the saved older posts. My mind was on overload after a few hours! Guess I got it wrong re the basic svc.
I have unfortunately gotten myself stuck in that set up process loop. It just doesn't seem to be able to connect via phone.
Re the ppp connection - I had previously read mention of that. Guess I'll have to do some more studying on that subject this wknd.
I don't want to pour good money after bad if this unit is pretty much shot, however. I have a series 2 w/lifetime (2004 so could not get in on that upgrade deal they had). I am hoping that sometime this year, with the digital conversion happening in Feb 09, that they make come up with another good deal for 04 lifetime conversions.

Rainbow: It is not uncommon for the older modems to be damaged by thunderstorms. As others have said the lifetime service was probably transfered to a new system once the current one broke. There are instructions for connecting an external model to the serial port.

Tivos manufactured before 10/01 have the ability to record manually by time and channel w/o a subscription because the company was not making it clear that a subscription was necessary. It was an unintentional "feature"

1st update (hopefully there will be more if I can get the philips working).
I had bought a one-for-all remote several years ago hoping it would work with a dvd player I had gotten. It didn't, so that remote went in a drawer.
I found it last night, and tonight I was able to get it to work with the sony 2000. It is a one-for-all model 6012. I was afraid it was not going to work since all the posts I has read talked about the 6131 model for the sony dvr.
Anyway, I programed it as vcr using code 0636, and it is loading right now. So now it finished and was displaying multiple phone numbers to choose from. This reminds me of the old computer dial up that I used to have to deal with -- but then, I guess it is still just that! I can't wait to see what this tivo will do or won't do once everything is updated.
Now, if I could get that philips to do something, I would be a very happy camper
2nd update. I already had a urc-6012 remote. It is working with the Sony Hvr2000. I had to do the set up again, and this remote does not have the thumbs down button that you need. Per Edmund, the famous guru, below is the help he gave me, which worked. Thought I would post it here in case others later one come searching for the same help.
Hi, with VCR code 0636 programmed in, the advanced codes are thumbs up-066 & thumbs down-062.
to map the advanced codes to keys on the remote:
1. vcr
2. press and hold SET for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 4
4. tap SET for one blink
5. enter 0 6 2
6. pick a key
repeat for thumbs UP
--------------------
I guess I'll be checking on that philips tomorrow to see if I can get that one to call in. My series 2 tivo remote does work with that one.

If the modem on the Philips machine is bad, you might still get an external one to work with the machine.

This is what I would go for... if I really felt that the Lifetime was still there.
