I'm a "legacy" user of a Series 2 Tivo prior to my upgrade to HD service/televisions 2 years ago. Since an HD Tivo box wasn't available at the time, I obviously went with the standard Comcast HD DVR. I'm an interface nazi, so I really loathe the deplorable way the Motorola box works, but there are some good aspects...okay one, but its a biggie...Video On Demand (VOD), and SPECIFICALLY HD On Demand. When you select a movie, and some are free, the selection plays instantly in HD, and the choices are relatively good (like a limited "New Release" section at your local video store, but in HD).

So, here's my dilemma: I found an "open box buy" for a Tivo Series 3 HD Box at Best Buy for $299. I bought it instantly, knowing that it is/was the high-end box. However, after perusing these forums for known issues or limitations, I'm quite disheartened. I want the Tivo interface, and I admittedly like the high-end feel of the box and experience, but frankly, I've got a few concerns that I need help having confirmed by the experienced users on this site. Here are my concerns, and if most of these cannot be answered in the positive, I'm sticking with Comcast:

1 - Do the UnBox movie rentals on Tivo start playing immediately?
....if not, and if the huge "delay" I read about is in fact the standard fare, big letdown when compared to what is available by VOD, which is instant and HD. I also own an Apple TV and am looking forward to their movie rental service (in HD) to start in a few weeks. If Apple's service proves (relatively) instant, then I won't care about this feature on the Tivo box.

2 - Are UnBox movies available in HD?
....if not, wow...big letdown compared to VOD and upcoming Apple TV

3 - Is Tivo-to-Go and Multi-Room viewing available on the Series 3 HD or Tivo HD available?
....if not, then this is another (prior) "advantage" that Tivo had that I was looking for in added value or features over the Comcast box. I have an iPhone, and I was looking forward to being able to transfer unwatched TV shows to this device.

4 - Is the Mac Desktop software compatible with the newer Intel Macs?
....I read on CNET that the Mac Desktop software has not been updated for the newer Intel Macs...wow, if not, what a let down. I have a G5 PowerMac desktop (non-intel of course), but its not the machine where I keep my digital content (photos, music). Again, my Apple TV does this well, so its not a deal breaker, but still....

5 - Is the Roxio Mac Tivo-To-Go software solution compatible with the Series 3 HD box?
....I read on another forum that a recent Tivo update apparently rendered this 3rd-party "Tivo-To-Go" solution for Mac inoperable. I hope not. Of course, that depends on the answer to item #3 above!

I want to keep the Tivo Series 3 HD box, but if these limitations listed above are in fact still present (and haven't been updated by subsequent software updates), I'm going to return my Tivo! I don't want to!

I welcome your assistance and recommendations....

TTG/MRV are available. Don't know about the Macintosh stuff.

As for movies -- I don't think Tivo is a good solution for movie viewing right now. I think it's worth it mainly because of expandability, as I was constantly having to monitor space on my Comcast DVR. Plus the search/wishlist features are much better, plus closed captioning is available w/o having to power off box & stop recording as one has to do on Comcast/Motorola/iguide.

Movie viewing, if you value immediacy over cost, it's really not possible to beat VOD. Internet downloads are either going to be slow or lower quality or both. But for me, I never used VOD, because @ ~$6/pop it was a bad value in my view vs. Netflix @ ~$19/month unlimited. Sure you don't get the movie immediately, but you get the best quality, no cropped-to-16:9 transfers, plus all the DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray extras. I see every movie I want to see, eventually, just not necessarily RIGHT NOW.

Wow, that was a really good deal you found, open box or not.

I'll answer the questions I can.

1) I don't use Unbox b/c it's an additional fee and not HD so I'm not sure and won't even guess

2) Not yet...

3) yes, MRV and TTG are live

I don't have a Mac so not sure on the rest. Enjoy your new S3.

I just got a TiVo HD, it says it uses the S3 architecure and my expereinces are.

1. The TiVo Desktop is a Universal Application (I just did a get info on mine)

2. TiVoToGo using Roxio works just fine for me. But I had to make sure I was using the version 9.2 TiVo system. Wouldn't work when I tried it with the 8.x TiVo System the box came with.

I don't know about the regular S3 like you have, but the TiVo HD works just fine for all you are asking.

IHTH,

Andy

Cool. So can anyone confirm if the Series 3 HD will automatically update to system version 9.2?

Also, I did a little more research on the SD/HD movie rentals through Apple on the Apple TV. The SD purportedly start instantly, so I would assume HD would have just a short delay (maybe 5 minutes?). If so, that is acceptable and I would then make that my source of "on demand" HD movie rentals.

Thanks for the continued feedback!

It will or you can force it to do so now...

From the Settings->Phone & Network menu. Choose Connect to Tivo service now option. Do that a couple times. If the Last status saying Pending Restart, pull the plug and it will update.

1. Unbox will start as soon as enough of the movie is buffered to allow play without stops or stuttering. Basically, it depends on the speed/quality of your network connection to the Unbox server.

2. No HD on Unbox as yet.

Your other questions have been answered.

If VOD is that much an issue for you, why not get a basic cable box (not a DVR) for VOD. The Tivo is soooo much better than the cable DVR for timeshifting and searching, etc, that the price you got is a no-brainer for that stuff.

On Unbox. Some stuff is close to DVD level but no HD on unbox at all. If you can start watching right away or not depends on your internet speed. There is very little that is free on unbox, but there is some.
