I have a series 2 Tivo with a service contract. Can I get a second Tivo series 2 without a service contract to use as a server only? Basically I want to have both on the wireless network, but only one with the abilitity to record shows. The second Tivo would only be used to upload shows from the first Tivo to watch on a TV connected to it. I was told that without a service contract, a Tivo DVR would not do anything with the network, including uploading shows from andother DVR or PC.

No activation on series 2 = doorstop, paperweight and/or boat anchor.

You mean using it as a "client". No, the network features require service. You'd be better off setting up a cheap HTPC for this purpose.

Yes, it would be more accurate to call it a client. I used the word 'server' because that is what it would be referred to in the Tivo setup. I might actually use it as a server to store and retrieve shows if I could!
If I prevented my current Tivo from getting updates from the internet (so it wouldn’t know the status of the service), how long would it continue to function normally? That is, how long would it be able to be accessed on my network?

It gets really mad if it can't get guide data for 2 weeks so I suspect it will around that time that you'll end up with a doorstop.
