My swim team is looking at purchasing a TiVo to use as a time-delay camera system. The only features I need to work are the ability to record/pause/rewind live-tv through a composite input. It would also be great to be able to access my recordings over a network. Can I do this without paying a subscription? Which box? Thanks

You're saying 'all you need to do is...' and then list the functions of a TiVo, most importantly RECORDING.
Unless you get an older "Series 1" machine that can record without service, or a DVD TiVo that came with "TiVo Basic" (a limited, "no-subscription fee" form of the TiVo service) you CAN'T record with a TiVo unless you subscribe.

TiVo hardware is sold below cost, so a subscription is required.
Basically, TiVo has determined that most customers would rather pay $0-$250 for a box with a subscription than pay $500-$700 for a box that requires no subscription (i.e. profit figured into price).

not made anymorebut if you can find the Toshiba or pioneer models of TiVo with a DVD recorder than you can do what you want and burn to DVD. Downside is you can not edit the recording to the DVD.
really a TiVo is not the right thing for you

I think you are better off getting a dedicated recorder made for the purpose of recording security monitors. Why go through the hassle of setting up recordings on a TiVo when there is hardware designed for this specific purpose.

Because old unsubbed TiVo's are (almost) dirt cheap!

Just get a DVD recorder with a hard drive.
