That's exactly what the problem is. You don't understand what you're complaining about. Thinking that the production of even the simplest programs can be done without money is just plain ignorance.

Not to mention that every PBS station sets its own schedule, so if you've got a problem with when Charlie Rose is being aired, contact your local PBS station. It's probably not even on at the same time for the rest of us.
Don't they need to pay, er, Charlie Rose?

Yeah, and they've got to run their station, which is a fixed cost regardless of what programming they're airing.

What is wrong with a plain set for a talk show? I think I have seen an episode and it was certainly inoffensive.

I don't watch it very often, but sometimes it is very entertaining... when it's not (most of the time), I don't watch it. (Err, it's not necessarily 'not entertaining', just less entertaining than something else I choose to watch/listen to.)

Charlie Rose actually does in-depth interviews. Not everyone likes that, and if you don't you have a plethora of choices for vapid, plug-a-movie type stuff (Leno, Letterman, etc). If you don't like it don't watch it.
