One of my Directivo series 2 pvrs has fallen victim to the 'pixellation on tuner 2 when s-video is used' problem. So I am looking to buy a replacement on craigslist or ebay. I want the replacement to be a tivo model (same as my surviving HDVR2, and generally reckoned to be better than the later models, if I read the mood of this forum correctly.)

I am seeing both series 2 and R-10 units at roughly the same prices. Presumably the R-10s would generally be newer, so that would be an advantage for it.

Are there any other advantages of one model vs. the other? Capacity? Reliability? They use the same remote, right?

Naturally before buying another series 2 I will be checking it works on tuner 2 with s-video enabled ;). Is the R-10 susceptible to that fault?

They use the same remote. Capacity for all R10's is 80GB(~70hr). Capacity for other series2's is 40GB(~35hr),80GB(~70hr), or 120GB(rare).

R10's will be newer, but they are more cheaply built. I have only heard of the tuner2 pixellation/svideo bug affecting hdvr2's, so you're probably ok with other Series2 units.

If you go for an RID (Receiver ID) model, that would be another way to be sure you got one newer than your HDVR2, presumably such that the pixellation bug may have been fixed by then. Such models would be a Hughes SD-DVR(40,80,120), or an RCA DVR(40,80,120). These are not the only ones, just the two I could think of off the top of my head when looking for an example.

I have 3 R10's. I recommend against them, for a myriad number of reasons.

Series 2's can be hacked, R10 require hardware modifications, If you use series 2's with 6.2a and PTVnet it is possible to use Multi Room Viewing. That is available in the TiVo underground forum. I think series 2's are your best bet. :D

Actually the unit that went bad on me with the tuner 2 pixellation/svideo problem was a Phillips (DSR 7000 I think), not a Hughes hdvr2. I was confused about the 'hdvr2' nomenclature when I posted about it in another thread.

Anyway, thanks for the tips
