Pardon the questions of a newbie, but why does Tivo not support satellite service? I use to have the HR10-250 with Tivo S/W and loved it! Now I have this crappie HR20. I would love to have the S3 with Directv. Any chances of that happening someday?

How does the phrase go....the chances are between slim and none and slim just left town?

Not going to happen.

DirecTV feels they don't need Tivo, and since they recently bought the ReplayTV patents it isn't likely they think they'll need them in the future as well.

BTW, technically TiVo never supported satellite service. It was DirecTV that used the TiVo software.

Here's another thread dealing with this subject.

That is two questions really.

The first is why DirecTV didn't continue development of new DirecTV TiVo DVRs? The answer there, is they probably felt it was better for them to fully control the platform in-house.

The second would be why the TiVo Series 3 platform doesn't support satellite? The answer is that the nature of the Series 3 (recording from cable or antenna directly), precludes recording from an STB. If they were to support satellite on the S3 platform, it would have to be in SD, or have costly HD video encoders.

They continue to support SD satellite on the Series 2 platform though.

Given the emergence of SDV dongles over USB, and DirecTV's "announcement" of a USB-based tuner it's certainly within the realm of "possible" for a better Tivo & DirecTV solution, at least from a purely technical perspective. Whether the two companies are willing to entertain such solutions is anyone's guess. It would certainly go a long way to make DirecTivo customers happy. But whether that would be cost-effective for either company isn't clear. It would seem that DirecTV doesn't consider the number of DirecTivo defectors to be significant enough of a risk to revenue. And given DirecTV's rabid protection of their encryption technologies it's not very practical for Tivo to do anything without DirecTV's cooperation.

Meanwhile, we've dropped DirecTV in favor of FIOS. That and successfully pitched the same idea to several friends, co-workers and neighbors. The FIOS triple play is priced well enough to make it worthwhile.

Hearty Directv dual tuner bitstream-direct recording with creamy Tivo goodness?

Directv on a pc (http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/directvs-pc-tuner-is-real/) plus (thanks to Nero) Tivo on a pc (http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2007-11/tivo-and-nero-collaborate-on-pc-dvr-software/) equals ..... no, I can't even say it!

and it's only 100 calories per serving!

I'm thinking possibly only the older HR10-250s(which I loved). Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.

Not new (capable of receiving the MPEG4 HD channels), or from DirecTV. You can get used or refurbed ones from various resellers.

If you decide to purchase a HR10-250 from someone else, just remember that you will not be able to receive any of the new HD channels, which are all MPEG4.

Also, DirecTV is supposed to be moving all the HD channels which are currently MPEG2 to MPEG4 sometime this year. If you check out dbstalk.com, it is supposed to be within the first quarter.

I have both the HR10-250 and the HR20-700. The interface on the HR20-700 is certainly different, but it is not that had to get used to and is certainly faster than the HR10-250.

The hr20 interface is actually faster than the tivo interface on a HR10-250? I am contimpating purchasing an hr20.

I don't have speeds listed in the link in my sig but I do have the differences. FWIW, I think the HR2x is faster. I haven't had a "Please Wait" or whatever it was when I hit the record button on my HR2x

I hope that we can as I have the older series2. But of course if I have to give them up, I would switch to something else.

But I would think that there are still receivers that work with stand alone tivoes or are they being phased out? Down the road eventually my equipment might be phased out and when that happens I will look at the alternatives other than directv as I do not plan on having the services for my tv dictate that I must use their equipment.

I left comcast for directv when I got tired of the new boxes they had that did not allow my vcr to control them and I had to set up recording on one channel only as I recorded on vcrs and did not watch live tv several years before tivos came out.
