Through TiVo's Stop||Watch(TM) service, which provides the industry's only second-by-second measurement of program and specific commercial ratings for both live and time-shifted viewing, CBS will have access to the industry's richest insights into DVR viewing behavior.

This partnership will allow CBS to develop and measure new strategies to deliver results for its advertising clients, including learning how to structure pods and interstitials to better keep audience attention during commercial breaks, and develop new and improved promotional strategies for time-shifted viewers to build audiences for its programs.
Interesting article...
What are "pods and interstitials?"

CBS is going to be pi**ed when they find out that there is NO "audience attention during commercial breaks" with us Tivo users.

If an advertiser would truly use the info Tivo provides to Advertise "To Me", I would likely watch. I find myself regularly noticing movies that might interesting me and actually rewind to catch the preview I was forwarding over. Advertising is not bad if it actually provides value to both parties. We just do not want to watch crap that we can care less about!

CBS will find that a 5-second ad right at the end of a commercial break will get much higher TiVo viewership than the second 30-second commercial in a row.

That, and the 1st commercial into the break. Sometimes, I'm lazy when going for the 30s skip button and if the ad catches my attention, I'll watch it.

I'm not sure what they mean by pod.. but you can infer the meaning by reading the first definition of it which links to another word:

I think a 5-second commercial is an example of an interstitial. Essentially unskippable and hard to FF through, particularly if it's immediately followed by the continuation of the program. Not as effective if it's between other ads.
Encarta (http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_561538431/commercial_pod.html) defines a "pod" as "a group of television advertisements, broadcast together usually in two-minute segments" - So it's the normal dose of ads.

"Interstitials" are short Audio/Visual elements that go between content elements in a show. The animation and whoosh sound that leads and follows replays in a sporting event is a good example of an interstitial. They may also be used to get in and out of the act of a show. They can be extremely short or longer, but in essence they are separator elements within a show.
A "Pod" is the entire grouping of commercials, promos, station IDs, etc. that appear between acts of a show, or between shows.
5 second commercials are still commercials. But most 5 second promos are often used as station or network IDs (Identifications)

first they need an audience for the actual shows ;)
Would seem to me that if CBS marketing wants to know about DVR viewing behavior it would be simpler (and probably more accurate) for the staff to get some DVRs and use them themselves.

Great, now that we know they're watching, let's all screw with their heads. Be really chaotic in how you blip through the commercials on CBS. Let the try building up stats based on that. Then, after a few months, pull the rug out from under them and have their advertisers REVOLT!

Actually, they would first need to have actual shows!!

In the world of business, Tivo has many enemies. Content producers, Networks, TV stations, advertisers.
I think Tivo will regret letting this information out of the bag. Tivo's enemies will be more aggressive than ever in trying to make sure that Tivo goes bankrupt.
Witness the three stock downgrades the day after the Echostar appeal verdict was announced. I believe those downgrades were bought and payed for by Tivo's enemies. Investment firms have been known to be "for sale" where upgrades and downgrades can be purchased and have nothing to do with the facts. Tivo's enemies are trying to hurt Tivo in any way they possibly can.
Let's hope that the Tivo deal with CBS does not come back to bite them in the A$$. But I think it will.

I wonder if CBS has a means to monitor timeshifting with HTPCs? I use mine to record all of my local OTA HD channels and my two S3 Tivos for recording the encrypted FIOS channels. I doin't record any network programs with either Tivo.

You are beyond absurd. DVR's are here to stay regardless if TiVo were to go out of business or not. Why don't you please keep your schtick over at the yahoo stock boards.

There is only one thing CBS can tell about my viewing habits when a commercial runs normally, and that is when I have gone to the kitchen for a snack or when I've gone to the bathroom.

so is it 1x FF for the kitchen and 2x FF for the bathroom or the other way around ;)
I assume 3x FF when you are in the seat.

No, 3x is too fast for me. It's 2x for normal commercial skips and regular speed for the bathroom and kitchen.

I always use 3x Fast forward to skip commercials. I can't get past them fast enough.

Not quite correct. There are a few commercials that are clever and/or funny enough that when a new variant crops up some people will back up and watch the commercial.
Advertisers, too, are moving into the TiVo-aware world. I'm used to seeing a "push thumbs up to record" indicator during program promos, because I've been a DirecTiVo customer since day one. It only just struck me that I'm still seeing a few of those, even though I'm now a cable TV subscriber!

Black Betty called the following absurd when in fact it is a fact.
Three separate investment houses downgraded Tivo on the day after the appeal verdict was announced.
It made no sense to downgrade when Tivo won the lawsuit so I said "I believe those downgrades were bought and paid for by Tivo's enemies. Investment firms have been known to be "for sale" where upgrades and downgrades can be purchased and have nothing to do with the facts. Tivo's enemies are trying to hurt Tivo in any way they possibly can"
It is a very well reasoned and logical conclusion and thought. To call it absurd and suggest that I go to the yahoo message board was totally uncalled for and very testy. If you cannot see that then I truly feel sorry for you. As far as I am concerned the matter is closed and you need to chill out.
But first I will say one more thing. I truly want to see Tivo survive. By suggesting that the CBS deal could hurt Tivo big time I was hoping that it would open some eyes and that people might contact Tivo and tell them the CBS deal is a mistake. One that they might back ot of if enough cuctomers contacted Tivo.
So before you get on your high horse and accuse me of not contributing, think a little bit before letting your fingers touch the keyboard. I am done on this matter. I suggest you calm down.

I will add one more thing. My post, for which the above was in response to, had everything to do with whether Tivo survives and not DVR's so Tivo Betty missed the point of my post.

we have found similarities between your posts and Bobneth/George Webster. You break forum rules and are known to post anything at all simply to push your stock talk. I agree with BlackBetty that you should go back to your yahoo stock board and stop spreading your nonsense here.

Man, you have a chip on your shoulder and a lousy attitude. What forum rules did I break? Pushing stock talk? I was merely commenting on how the stock downgrades made no sense in light of Tivo winning the appeal. Get the chip off your shoulder and then you will be able to cut me some slack. Saying I should get off this message board is just plain rude.

I think it is impossible to skip commercials. If you FF through them frames from the commercial appear on the screen. If you 30 sec skip through them, each 30 sec commercial gets a few of it's frames on the screen. That should count as "watching" them. Like when a receiver catches a ball with the tip of his toe out of bounds...still out of bounds.
That's still more than they got from me in the dark time before tivo, when commercial breaks meant it was time to get up and take a dump.

I got home in time to watch the 2nd half. But I watched it on NFLNET instead of CBS, so i gues my viewing didn't count?
