Well, those large girls DIDN'T have it, IMHO. They certainly won't get anywhere in Hollywood - and not will the Venezuelan guy.

1st time I've actually watched the auditions, since nothing else is on. Do they purposely not show the better singers? I don't think even the ones they have sent to Hollywood so far can cut it.

My east coast feed of AI didn't record tonight, the to do list say someone modified the season pass on both of the tivo's which is wierd. Anyone have a similar problem? At least I can get the west coast feed.

I thought the second one (Britney?) had a fantastic voice. Yeah, due to looks probably won't make it far, but she was the best I've heard so far this season.

The 16 year old former "American Junior" was bad and SO ANNOYING! Man, I was so happy she was sent packing.

The first girl, the one from the meat market, Shannon, actually had a good voice.

She just didn't know how to sing. She oversang the hell out of the song, playing games with it, instead of just singing.

I don't get it. Why would anyone tell her that that's the proper way to sing.

They didn't. They told her to work on it.

Like so many others. I don't know why they can't just try and sing a simple melody.

Because they see people like Christina Agulera and think that's what they are supposed to do.

I completely agree with you. I thought she sounded fantastic. Her friend singing jazz sounded just a little too nasal to me.

I also really liked Syesha - she looks great and sounds great. And it just seems like she is a nice person. I hope she does well. :)

Was this the last "audition" show? I don't think I can watch these first couple of rounds any longer. I am looking forward to Hollywood.

That happened to me too (and I didn't modify anything). Waiting for the torrent.

+1. Starting this year, I am skipping the audition shows. I will pick it up in Hollywood.

ok singers..question..why did they get on that country girl for the up and down/inflection or whatever it's called yet when certain other people did that, they thought it was good? Or at least didnt penalize them for it and say it was stupid to do that?

They said they didnt like that the girl did that and i dont think were saying was bad, just that it wasnt appropriate or they were looking for it.

You might want to check your to do list and see if anything is being recorded past today. You might have to redo all your season passes.

Not to start a hijack, but it appears to have been an isolated incident (it recorded the show that comes on after AI that I'm embarassed to mention by name). It happened a few months ago only once, too (Survivor, I think). I saw and posted to the sticky in DTiVo forum (it's an R10). Maybe I'll skim a few more pages of that 20+ page thread.

Because, some people can't sing, and try to cover that up by doing all kinds of runs and tonal inflections. You have to start with good tone and control in your voice.

The folks they most often mention are Christina Aguielerra (sp?) and Mariah Carey, and while they both do a lot of runs, they are always controlled and in tune. You can follow along as they do it, almost like a great jazz musician improvising. You find yourself going along for the ride, anticipating the last note.

Most of the people on American Idol, must mix a bunch of inflections in all over the place, with no sense of tune, or pacing.

Case in point, that first girl. I honestly have no idea if she was a good singer or not, maybe she was, but she destroyed whatever song that was that she tried to sing.

Yeah, what the hell was up with that? She's obviously a decent singer b/c of all the other things she's won, but just sing the song!

It seemed like she was just trying to be like Janis Joplin, all rough sounding, but most people who try to sound like Janis can't pull it off.

maybe she's not a decent singer and all the others were just really bad...either way, that did make her the best by definition :)

I assume holding out ones hand helps you somehow too?

Yea whenever I hear them ask a contestant what they are going to sing and the say "I'm going to sing ____ by Janis Joplin" you know they are going to be sent packing.

I did admire that first girl's burping abilities.

Speaking of shows that people are too ashamed to name...I see that an American Juniors "semi-finalist" (similar to AI's final 24) auditioned. I wonder how many of the five winners are eligible (I know one had a regular TV part, and I think the Thompson sisters have active recording contracts).

(For those of you who don't know, or don't want to remember: AJ was in the summer of 2003, open to kids younger than 16; they were trying to form a five-person singing group for some reason (probably to compete with the "Kidz Bop Kids"), although except for an appearance on an AI special, they never sang again on TV (they made brief appearances on things like "Nickelodeon U-Pick Live".) The main differences from AI were, Simon was nowhere to be seen (they felt that having kids audition in front of judges would be too cruel, so instead the audition shows focused on the "stage mothers"), and instead of voting people off each week (again, this would seem cruel), viewers voted somebody into the group one at a time. Also, for some strange reason, there was choreography involved in the early audition round.)

Didn't AJ take criticism for encouraging pedophilia? 10 year-old kids dressed in scanty clothes with make-up and stuff?

The girl from AJ.... I imagine that 98% of her school was cheering when she was told that she can't sing. She must be a treat to encounter in the real world.

Yeah, the inflection in her voice was annoying as hell. "They said I'm acting!"
Her whole demeanor was annoying, actually.

well she is only a teen and probably didnt understand exactly what they were trying to say nor the criticism. Also you could see in her mannerisms she was just a youngster.

A youngster with an enormous ego. Maybe she would have understood the judges better if they had told her "you're not all that".

I've seen many teens who act nothing like that.

She came off to me in a similar fashion as some young beauty-pageant circle kids do - kind of a sheltered, mommy always everywhere I go telling me 'I'm the best of all of them' kind of thing. A skewed enough view of the world and her place in it that she's the center and anything contrary to her is just plain wrong.

I finally got around to watching some of these episodes, I deleted a few, but watched Omaha and Miami. At the very least those two big girls were entertaining. I love Tivo for letting me fast forward through the awfulness.
