I have a buddy of mine with a R-10. Over the last week while watching live TV, his Tivo randomly gives him a black screen with an error message of unable to find signal. It does not search for a signal, just displays the message. His only recourse is to restart it.
He spoke to DTV yesterday, and of course they are sending him one of their DVR's. He wants to keep his Tivo. Is there anything he can do?
If his original is not fixable, can he order another Tivo unit, swap out the cards and use the new Tivo?

Is the black screen and message found on both tuners?
The R-10 has two inputs. Each one has a tuner. If you are getting trouble with one of them, swap the antenna dish cables into the back of the R-10.
If your problem moved from one tuner to the other it's likely that the problem is outside of the R-10. Check the coax cables and the two LNBs on the dish.
If you still have trouble on that one tuner only, it might be one tuner has gone bad inside the R-10.
Any new trees or tall buildings to the South of your friend's roof? Large birds landing on the dish and knocking it out of position? Best of luck,
-Jack HDVR2 (R-10 in storage)
