I have a factory RCA DVR40 unit that was acting up and would not allow me to record programs anymore. It would record suggestions but not anything I told it to record. I reset the unit and now it has been on the screen that says, " Cleaning Program Information & To Do List" for two days. It says it may take an hour but I think it may be wrong.......
I've tried to unplug and wait to get it to reset but after booting, it comes to this screen again and locks up.

Is there any way to perform a "hard reset" or what can I do to get past this problem? No buttons on the unit or remote seem to respond.

Pulling the plug IS a hard reset, You probably have a failed hard drive

I have not done so, but I've been told there are instructions over in another forum for replacing a hard drive

Some other resources... I have NOT used, but they have been discussed here before

You can buy a preimaged drive from www.DVRupgrade.com or buy a drive anywhere and download an imaged instantcake CD from DVRupgrade. You will be up and running in no time. Good Luck:)
