Tons of 90's references and pretty well spoofed a batch of movies and TV shows at the same time.
"Townies" :cool:

According to Weird Al, Kurt Cobain once told him he knew he "made it" because of Weird Al's parody.~ Nice little multi level joke there. :)

I like that they finally addressed the continuity problem of Bart's age and his parents age. :)

I loved the shout-out to BttF...
But only BttF III was the only one in the 90's (1990).

We turned this episode off about halfway through. Just awful.

I think he's talking about the scene where the guy calls kurt on the phone and tells him about the "new sound" which was what happened in BttF (the original).

Weird... I thought it was the best one I've seen in a while.
"I want you to put your knowledge in me."
I laughed at that line and the one that went something like this, "No, Marge. Anything that looks like a penis is bad." And also at the speech he gave about "I miss you".

I think it was done not so much as a homage to the 90's (or 80's), but rather the writers were sitting around and saying "Wait---if Homer started grunge music, should we explain how Kurt Cobain seemed to have started it?"

Hmm. I thought it was a reference to "Family Guy," which did the exact same joke two years ago...

Of course, the big problem with this episode is that we've already seen what the Simpsons were doing for the entire '90s -- in fact, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie were their current ages as of Christmas 1989. (Even earlier than that if you count the "Tracey Ullman Show" appearances. :D )

Clearly this episode is "non canonical" ... hell, MTV never even mentioned Homer's past in the B-Sharps. :D

The B-Sharps meteoric rise to the top was in 1985:

Of course, once again, issues with timeline, since Bart and Lisa are already born.

The Simpsons timeline is a bit screwed up, to put it mildly. :)
EDIT: actually, no, Lisa and Bart were NOT born when Homer was singing in the B-Sharps. So at least in that respect, it works in the timeline.

I thought it was a great episode, but not the best. However, for people to complain about the timeline is pretty silly at this point.

I also noticed that the characters in this episode had a yellowish skin tone.
People aren't yellow!

I seemed to remember that the kids were around but then I misunderstood the summary linked to above. So I guess I was right at first. :)

I liked this song but not Margerine. I was kind of luke warm about the episode, though I loved Marge's hair.

I can honestly say that it wasn't a problem at all for me. It's cartoon about yellow people after that non of the rest of it needs to be real.
Great ep for me, but my children simply didn't get all the references.

This episode, while funny in parts, does not make up for about eight years of sub par, they can do much better than that episodes.

Of course, the big problem with this episode is that we've already seen what the Simpsons were doing for the entire '90s -- in fact, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie were their current ages as of Christmas 1989. (Even earlier than that if you count the "Tracey Ullman Show" appearances.)Tell you what: we'll make the show time-consistent from the beginning. This includes everybody aging "in real time" like on a live-action TV show.
Based on how old they were when the show started in late 1989, today Bart would be almost 30, Lisa in her mid-20s, and Maggie about 20. How many years ago would people have stopped watching the show because "the characters just aren't the same" - like they pretty much did with Leave it to Beaver, The Brady Bunch, The Cosby Show, and Roseanne?
Also, the "ten years between when Homer and Marge graduated from high school and when Bart was born" was originally five years; Homer's age was originally 34-35, but now he's 39.
Besides, do you really want a list of the show's date inconsistencies? Well, first of all, based on dates mentioned in episodes, Bart was born in 1981, Lisa during the 1984 Olympics, and Maggie in 1992, but that makes 10-year-old Bart 12 years older than one-year-old Maggie.
At least one episode (I want to say two) has mentioned that Sideshow Bob framed Krusty "in 1990", even though that would have meant Bart was far younger than 10 (and Maggie not even born, even though she was in the audience of Sideshow Bob's show) when it happened.
Lisa has had two different 8th birthdays (on one, Bart got her a song; on the other, a laser pointer), Milhouse has two different 10th birthdays (Bart was at one of the parties but not the other), and there have been at least five different Christmases and three different "last days of school", one of which wasn't even at Springfield Elementary.
(And let's not get into the "two years later" scene in "All's Fair in Oven War"...)

I was kind of meh on this episode. It did seem like a not-as-good rehash of "The Way We Were" (set in 1974, albeit with "The Hustle" anachronism).

I thought this was a very good episode. And they clearly poked fun at the timeline when Homer talked about the 90s and Bart replied, "The 90s? Never heard of it." It's a cartoon people, that's been on for almost 20 years. The timeline is going to have to get messed up eventually. They've always fudged things for the sake of a joke or plot point. Springfield changes location and geographically virtually every other episode. Heck, even the floorplan of their house changes.
The fact that the timeline doesn't match is no reason to bag on this episode. It's not Lost where stuff like that actually matters.

Understand it is a cartoon. It would interesting to see a Simpson's Universe Timeline. Just to make Comic Book Guy happy.
Even real shows have issues when they have been on for some 20 years. Law and Order have had Lawyers turn Cops (Brisco).
