View Full Version : Repaired DTivo now at 6.2 (not 6.2a) - okay to leave it as is?

I got tired of the Sat 2 problem (pixelation & freezing, even with just one composite video out hooked up) on my RCA DVR40 and sent it to CCS Corporation for repair ($100) and upgrade to 80GB ($30). Got it back and it works great - no more video or sat strength issues :).
They loaded the new drive with SW version 6.2-01-2-351 and it thinks it's a Hughes SD-DVR40 now. The service no. prefix is 321-. I've left the phone line unplugged to avoid receiving newer SW that might cause problems (like 6.3e).
I need some advice:
1. Should I expect any issues if I leave the phone line unplugged and leave the SW at 6.2? I'd read elsewhere in the forum that 6.2a has an update for the newer Daylight Saving Time. If I plugged the phone line in, what is likely to happen with the SW version? If I should upgrade to 6.2a, what are my options for doing so?
2. I had read in the InstantCake release notes (on the DVRUpgrade site) that it was a bad thing if the the SW suffix (-351) didn't match the Service Prefix (321-). Is this still true?
Right now, I have no problems with the box - everything works like new. Obviously, I'd like to keep that way unless I *need* to make a change. Suggestions?

See what others say but in the mean time I would hold it at 6.2. It is likely if you keep it plugged in it will skip right to 6.3e which you don't want. I would keep it as is until DTV finally decides to roll out the major update they have hinted at earlier in the year. Hopefully it will happen before the day light change comes around again. Either way what you have is better then daily reboots and missed recordings.

CCS, One of my favorite places. They did you a favor by loading it at 6.2 because they know all about the 6.3E and the problems it caused.Do yourself a big favor and leave it alone and no phoneplug hooked back up or you will be back in the same spot you were.

Another vote for leaving that phone line disconnected. Wait until you hear on this forum that the latest version from Directv is bug-free before plugging in that cord.

Leave as is. Don't mess with it.

Do clean out the nag messages about it not connecting. If you get too many, the system will hang if you do go to clean out a large number of messages. Otherwise, follow the above suggestions.

-or- just never go to the messages menu :)

Why do I get the feeling the cord is never going to get plugged in again?
The remaining question has to do with whether I'm going to run into problems when Daylight Savings Time starts again.

[QUOTE=bparks;5921880]The remaining question has to do with whether I'm going to run into recordings. For scheduled recordings, the DTivo uses the guide clock.

As long as all your recordings are season passes, you'll have no problems with DST. One time recordings will be the only problem.

markI have two Series 2 DirecTivo's with 6.3e software connected to the phone line, and one with 6.2 software not connected to the phone. The 6.2 runs rock solid with no problems. I do get the nag screen, but one click and it's gone. Don't mess with success.

I would just plug it in an operate it normally. 6.3e is not in the stream any more and I believe the one in the stream, 6.3f is a bug fix and the upgrade promised by directtv. I say this because of the new setup screens in Music Photos, and More. It seems pretty obvious that Directv or Tivo is going to throw a switch and allow Tivo Desktop and remote scheduling to work as they do on standalones now.
I don't see the downside. It will surely fix the DST problems and there will be no nag screens and when the switch is flipped you'll be ready to go. You'll also have the software version that matches your hardware because 6.3f is also a version consolidation release.
It's okay to leave it as is, but there's no reason to worry about upgrade as so many have urged. Just operate it normally and enjoy.
I installed the zipper on both of my Tivo's 2 years ago and have never upgraded or hooked a phone line to them since. My DST is still not correct either. :D

I would get the latest MFS Live iso image, create a bootable CD,
buy a 300 Gig hardisk, copy my working hardisk with the 6.2
software so I have a backup. Then, connect the phone line.
If you end up with a problem after connecting the phone line
you can easily go back to 6.2 by re-imaging the drive using
your backup copy. The other benefit is you have a ready to use
drive if the existing drive crashes or gets a new software
release that breaks the system.
