A few weeks ago, I canceled the service on my original Series 1 (Sony) Tivo. It had originally had lifetime service, but I transferred it to my Series 3 under the special lifetime transfer option ($199). My expectation was that I would be able to continue to use the S1 to do manual recordings. I thought that any Series 1 that shipped with version 2 or earlier could ALWAYS do manual recordings. So, what can I do to get this capability restored? Thanks.

Series 1 TiVo's that shipped with 1.3 and earlier can do manual recordings. Those that shipped with 2.0 cannot. Sometimes even TiVos that should be able to do it are unable to. A call to customer service can rectify that situation. Wouldn't hurt to call to see if your unit is eligible.

Well, Tivo says that they cannot let me use the old S1 for manual recordings because my software upgraded to 3.0 (I think that was 2002?). They say it's impossible. :eek:

So, I guess that leaves me needing to get an old image from somewhere.

Other constructive suggestions appreciated.

The software version currently on the tivo has nothing to do with it's ability to record manually. IIRC, they stopped shipping tivos with 1.3 and started shipping with newer software in Oct. '01. If your tivo was manufactured before 10/01 then you should be able to record manually. If not, you are out of luck. It's my understanding that the Sony S1 Tivos were almost all manufactured and shipped with 2.0, only a small handful got out the door with 1.3 before 10/01.

I bought mine in September of 2000, so it SHOULD be able to do manual recordings still. Tivo is insisting that is not the case. I'm not very happy about it.
