I just had the comcast DVR converted to TiVo yesterday, and lo and behold, I can no longer control the volume output from the DCT3412 DVR. What's worse is that the DVR volume output is very low, and since I have it conencted to a 5.1 receiver, when I turn the volume up on the receiver, I get static before I start to hear it !
I called the customer support line, but they were not able to help.
Anyone know how I can control the audio output level on a comcast DVR that has been uploaded with the TiVo SW?
Thanks,

volume level cannot be controlled through the set top box if you are using a digital output (optical or spdif) to your 5.1 (which if you aren't, why are you using a 5.1 receiver anyways) It is a pure digital signal received by your 5.1 receiver once it gets to your receiver, then it is converted to analog and volume can be controlled.
hope this helps

My 5.1 receiver does not have "optical" or "SPDIF" inputs ... it has RCA inputs.
Furthermore, the problem is that I need to raise the audio output level from the set top box in order for the receiver to effectively manage the volume.
As I said, before the TiVo SW install, I was able to control the volume from the set top box to effectively match the volume control on the receiver.
Now, I cannot control the volume on the set top box, so the audio sounds awful !

To start, if your "5.1" reciever does not have an optical or spdif(single orange RCA) input, then it isnt 5.1, its stereo. if it has a built in dvd player, maybe that is 5.1, but only when playing dvd's.
but as for your question, i have not seen an audio control from the box itself. I assume you tried it with the silver remote already.
If it were me, I'd pick up a reciever that has some type of digital input.

There are some 5.1 receivers that have 5.1 separate inputs. Certainly a pain to plug in all of those cables, but still do exist.

and you've seen any piece of technology that has 6 separate outputs for speakers ? cant say that I have, but I've been wrong before. unless some type of receiver has those outputs that go to a corresponding amplifier or something, but in order to have 5.1 you'll need to have a digital decoder

My point is being missed.
The problem is that I used to be able to control the volume output from the set top box, and now I can't. If I can't hear my TV shows without a huge hiss, it's not going to be a good experience for me ;)
So, if Comcast can't fix their TiVo software to control the volume on the set top box, I'm not going to be able to use this service.

Well, my old Panasonic DVD player had an optical out, as well as 5 discrete outs (I am not sure about the .1 channel). My new Sony BluRay player has 5 outs (again, not sure about the .1 channel) as well as optical and coax digital outs.

I powered down the set top box, and lo and behold, the volume output from the set top box is such that I can now manage it from the receiver.
When in doubt, reboot :)
