I may have accidentally killed my tivo. The fan was a bit noisy, so I took off the cover, removed the fan and got rid of all the dust. I replaced the cover and things seemed to work better. For a while, that is. After about an hour, the tivo shut down. I couldn't figure out what was going on until I realized I forgot to reconnect the fan -- it got too hot and shut down. I let the thing cool off for several hours but it wouldn't restart.
At first I thought it was a power supply issue, but I put in a ps from another unit and it didn't work either. The original ps worked fine in the other unit, so I ruled out a power supply problem.
When I plug in the tivo, there is a small clicking noise from the power supply (or nearby). The fan (which I reconnected;)) doesn't start, nor does the hard drive start. When I disconnect the ribbon that connects the power supply to the motherboard, the clicking stops. I've ruled out the ribbon as the cause because the same ribbon worked fine in the other unit.
Have I killed my tivo by letting it overheat?
Is there anything else I can do to get it running?
If it's dead, I want to be able to get my programs off the hard drive, but from what I've read elsewhere, there's no way to do this.
I'd appreciate any help you can lend. Thanks!
