I am setting up a new TiVO HD, and forced a download for the newer updates, and it's taking forever. I'm at one and a half hours and counting. The TiVO guy says it's normal for a phone download...anyone else's take this long??

If I understood you correctly, you're connecting to Tivo via dialup. If thats the case, it will take a long time. I'm not sure how long but a hour and a half doesn't seem unusual at all.

I haven't done a phone download in a LONG time but that sounds right. Do you have broadband?

I have wireless, but not the TiVO wireless thingy yet.
I'll try setting it when I go to bed tonight, and see if it's finished in the morning.
I don't think it should take more than 7 hours...well, maybe I'll sleep late.
Thanks for your responses.

i had a problem completeing a call with it doing an intitial download on a wireless modem setup (3 days ago). it would stay on forever, and then never complete, ending with a 'call interrupted.' for some reason it has problems with a major dl (when its upgrading to a newer sw version, or getting intial guide info for a 2 week period) when using wireless modem.
it was taking so long on my second attempt that i unplegged the phone line to get it to stop.
so i used a 30 foot phone cord i had from an older series 1, and it completed the call in about 30 minutes w/o a problem. i dont think it should take longer than 30-45 minutes to complete any of the calls.
i used the cord after the cc install too, as thats a long call for guide info. once past that, the wireless works fine.

Hmmm...I would think the wireless connection would go considerably faster than the phone connection...in fact, that's what the CSR at TiVO told me. 30-45 minutes was my guess, But the posts above seem to indicate otherwise.

He didn't say he had a wireless connection, he said "wireless modem setup". Whatever that is...
Using broadband (either with ethernet or wireless adapter) is very fast.

Are you using a Tivo "approved" wireless adapter? I don't mean the Tivo brand
adapter, just one from the list at tivo.com of adapters confirmed to be compatible with Tivo.
My unapproved(not used anymore though) adapter always worked for regular
updates, but that may no longer be the case.
Whenever you are using an adapter not listed as fully Tivo compatible, and something is not working right(networking related), the adapter is probably the culprit.

hybucket is using a phoneline. Er, wait...
I have wireless, but not the TiVO wireless thingy yet.
Do you mean you have wireless internet in your home, but not for your Tivo?
rickmeoff may be using wireless phone jacks, but I'm not sure. :)
If you are using a telephone, why not take the wireless(as in wireless telephone modem) out of the equation, at least for the initial updates.
Connect the Tivo directly to the phone jack with the cord provided.

This entire thread is like the game of telephone.
The first post states it's a POTS connection and subsequent posts confirm it's not going over broadband.
I believe new THDs ship with 8.1 (I think, I only looked once and then it was upgraded) and the upgrade takes you to 9.2a. I'm guessing the slices are similar in size to Tivo slices on other Tivo units, so that means you're looking at ~20+ MB download total, though it may have to dial in more than once to collect everything required.
If the network and phone connection status doesn't show "pending restart" after all your calls, keep calling. Or better yet, if you have wireless in the house but not the Tivo adapter, you probably can go wired if you move the Tivo closer to your broadband router. Connect using a wired connection until you see the pending restart message. The process to unbox a brand new THD and get it upgraded over broadband to 9.2a takes about 30 minutes (I upgraded over a 1.5 Mbps download speed, so yours may be faster or slower).
