A few years back i had a early series2 stand alone tivo and it was fisher price utter crap. Boy has tivo come a long long long way!. I got a Tivo HD for my birthday and WOW. Hooked it up let it update overnight called comacst the next morning and went and picked up a MCard (dual stream cablecard) got home poped it in and called comcast CS and in less than one minute i had all my channels digital HD nba season pass etc etc.
I am 99.8% happy with it. The other .2% is i can't figure out how to turn off that time out. When i'm at the tivo central screen it always goes back to live tv. I am a sports junkie and don't watch live tv at all. And last night i was in tivo central about to watch something and the phone rang. While i was talking on the phone the tivo all of a sudden switched to live tv while i was recording two things at once well it switched to a basketball game i was recording and really looking forward to watching and there it was on the screen with less than a minute to go. My game was ruined!!!!!
Is there any way to disable that time out so it only goes to live tv when i tell it to not when it wants to?

The TivoHD is awesome. As for the time-out I'm assuming they do it to prevent burn-in on expensive HDTV's. It would be really cool if they eventually added a screensaver instead though.

There is no way to prevent the tivo menus from going back to live tv however, if you start playing back one of the recordings and then pause it, tivo will not go back to live tv until you tell it too.

That stupid timeout has scared the crap out of me more times than i can count. I figure its probably the #1 most annoying Tivo misfeature.

Yea, it has scared me a couple of times myself. Also there have been a couple of times where I had it on tivo menu and had to go upstairs for something and totally forgot about the tivo and all of a sudden start hearing voices downstairs and it took me a minute or two before I realized what happened. I didn't think anyone was in the house but I couldn't figure out why I was hearing the voices.

Yeah, they time you out of the Tivo menu yet they don't implement a screen saver for a paused recording. Makes perfect sense to me!

The best thing about Tivo HD is all the free PPV's.

It is literally the only reason I use standby.

I'm sure he's talking about the unencrypted QAM channels a S3 or THD can find when CableCARDs aren't installed... You can often find people's on-demand videos streaming unencrypted on these channels. You don't necessarily need a TiVo do to this, of course. Any QAM tuner will do, including the ones found in most HDTV's that are sold today.

I don't use cablecards earlier.

Are you saying the cable company broadcasts PPV's in the clear if you can find the correct subchannels? I've never found this to be the case.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Mine come in on the 88, 89, and 90 subchannels. For example, I watched Chuck and Larry, and Superbad last night, and Wild Hogs and Fracture this morning. Others have said they are other peoples on-demand orders on your headend. I'm not so sure I buy this theory, as they always start on the hour (at least at my location), so they are easy to track down.

My set's qam tuner will not do it (Pioneer 5070HD). It will only tune channels that have picture and sound at the exact time you scan.

Ok, that's cool, I'll have to try it. I would've thought it was encrypted...

Agreed...I love all three of my THD's...they are awesome. MRV is the best...so is the TTCB/Photos/Video from the home pc. There are some small glitches here and there but always things I can live with...worth every penny...
