In response to engadget (http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/10/23/tivo-hd-vs-series3/)'s article by our very own bdraw, what is the manufacturer date on your Series 3 (and not the TiVo HD...only Series 3 HD's).

If you do vote for after July 2007, please post what your manufacturer date is (Remember, this is the Series3 with the OLED display).

I have one of each (manufacture date, not type of series 3, both are the original S3 - THX version). I answered yes in the spirit of the poll (to answer the question on engadget about manufacture date).

The new one (which I'd been trying to get a good price on for the holidays) was built after I decided to buy one (13 Dec 07).

Since both of mine were purchased before July 2007 I would venture to say they were built before then. :)

That's exactly why I made it so that you could pick either or both, but as you said, in the spirit, we're just looking for anyone who had one > July 2007, so that's great. So the date on it is 12/13/2007, or you bought it then? If the manufacturer date is not 12/13/2007, what was it?

Amazon, w/ rebate before 26-Jan-08. Will probably be cheaper soon, but prepping for FIOS - it's available here now.

My S3 (yes, an S3) just came in from Vanns.com (via Amazon) as well with a manufacture date of 14-Dec-07.

I assumed it was old and had been around the block; the box didn't look so hot and there's a small scuff mark on the silver bezel. I looked the date because of this thread.

I bought a white HD remote (by itself) last month and it has chrome (mirror finish) trim. The black remote that came with this S3 has metallic gray plastic trim. Are they all like this?

I wonder if the refurbs get new manufacture dates?

Bizzy,
That's a great question, because I have two S3s and while my first one has never given me one issue -- despite me replacing the drive -- the second was just replaced for the second time -- TiVo recommended I not use a power strip! Ha, like that's an option ow would make a difference -- and the replacement I received which seems new, has a date of Oct 07. The main reason I think its new is because it still had the protective plastic on the front display and that isn't the easiest thing to put back on.

TiVo is not going to change the manufacture date on a refurb. Unless you are suggesting they are replacing the entire motherboard and the components for each refurb which would make no sense.

I have two S3s, one with a date of 10/03/06, and the other with 10/25/07.

Yes. Right near the power connection it says: "Made in Mexico 13 Dec 07" (the date is just below the made in mexico).

Same with me, mine came from NewEgg.com, not Amazon.

I just read the article.

What is the point of this poll? Is there something different with S3's made before or after that date?

Some people have been claiming that Tivo stopped producing the S3.

Isn't it wrong, ethically and legally, to sell refurbished items a new? I would be very pissed if I received a refurb if I paid for a new one.

bizzy

Maybe I wasn't clear. I wasn't accusing Tivo of selling refurbs as new.

What I meant to ask about was whether the 'Manufactured on' date for warranty replacement refurbs was the date they were refurbed, or the date they were originally manufactured.

I suspect the former, and if so, this might be confusing the results.

Correct me if I am wrong but when the Tivo HD came out and TiVo made the announcement they said the S3 would continue to be their Premium model while they were releasing the cheaper model, hence the THX certification and the Crestron compatability which is basically as high end as you can get (a $6000 remote control system)
I have been to a few high end Home Theater stores that don't even have back rooms to store stock in everything is custom built to order and the Tivo S3 is on the list of items you can add.
I equate it to how many Ferarri dealerships do you see versus how many Ford and GM dealers, just because you don't see Ferarri's doesn't mean they stoped making them it is just the average joe buys more Fords and GM's so it goes with Tivo more people will buy the Cheaper HD version instead of the S3 especially after the rebate period is over so stores are going to stock what is going to sell more.
I don't expect TiVo to stoop making the S3 until maybe when a S4 comes out to take it's place, but with what rumors I have read about what TiVo is developing next the price will probably be close to the $1000 range.

Yes, but the theory was that the replacement for the S3 would be based on the TiVo HD to save on cost, but basically the same thing. Obviously the theory was wrong.

Have these really been discontinued? It seems whenever a store runs out they get more of them in a week later. My Series 3 has a build date of Jan 18, 2008 by the way.

I'll need to doublecheck mine to see what the manufacture date is, but I have a question. I got one of the #648 series from Circuit City last wknd. At Costco, they had just received a new shipment, and that is #652 series. Does anyone know if there are any differences in these 2 series #'s?

In the language typically used on this forum, 648 refers to the S3 (released in 09/2006) and 652 refers to the TivoHD or THD (released in 2007). The S3 has an OLED display and a 250gb stock hard drive. The THD has no OLED display and a 160gb stock hard drive.

This thread is asking about the manufacture dates of the S3s, not the THDs. There has been some speculation that the S3 was discontinued in favor of the THD.

My Series 3 Tivo has a Manufacturing date of 14-Jan-08. Bought from Amazon, who still has more available from their web page.

If Tivo has indeed discontinued the model, they sure are still making a lot of them. I wonder if they fueled the rumors to spur the sales?

Received a new Series 3 last week ordered from Amazon. It has a Manufacture date of 18-Apr-08 which was a real surprise to me. Made in Mexico.

One small issue, the top of the unit had no screws in it. I took it out of the box and could feel that the top was loose, then realized that someone on the production line forgot to put screws in the lid.

Powered up and everything seems OK, registered it as a lifetime unit.
