being a dtv customer, this was all new to me.
i had bh (tampa/st pete area) come out to my moms house today and install an m card in a thd that i bought for her. guy arrived on time, and i immediately asked him if he had ever installed a cc in a tivo before. he replied that he had 'yet to install a cablecard in anything.'
so i handed him the dummy sheet, and we sat down in front of the thd and popped the card into the number 1 slot. it immediately came up on screen, and said to 'contact your service provider for initialization' and gave an 800 number.
the guy asks me, 'is that the number for tivo?'
i told him that was an 800 number for BRIGHT house, and that he had to call in and get this thing authorized (glad i did some reading here). while he called in, the screen changed and it said it was doing a firmware update.
within 3 minutes it had finished, and i had the host id number on screen, and he called it in with the card number. 2 minutes later, all channels were working without a problem as we went through the 'test channels.'
as i was checking to see that the premiums were working ok in the test channel mode, he grabs the cable box and starts pulling the power cord through the tv stand (it was unplugged), and it hangs on the power cord from the tivo which unplugs it from the back of the unit.
beautiful.
so i plug it back in, and while it begins its slow rebooting process, he has me sign the sheet showing i received the card, and then says 'thank you' and heads for the door. i asked him to stay until it rebooted, but he said 'it should be fine (yes, this is the same guy who thought the 800 number on the cc screen was for tivo),' and hurries out to the driveway.
anyway, 3 minutes later it reboots, and is fine. i rerun guided setup, and every channel that me mom is supposed to have is there.
so the guy who has dtv (me), along with the guy who had never installed a cc before had no real problems; he was at the house for all of about 10 minutes, total. painless procedure, really.........couldnt have been easier.
the hd on that thing seems way better than what i have on my dtv units, thats for sure (better quality pic). if i didnt need 3 of 'em (and a couple more sd units) and they werent so expensive, id give dtv the boot --as i like the thd unit WAY better than the hr20.
