I hear a lot about lifetime membership... where does one find this... I purchased the HD box (180 min) within the last 30 days.
Is this the same as VIP?
Thanks

As of today, lifetime is only available on each box after the first. It costs $399.
The offer to purchase your first box with lifetime (through gift offer) expired last week.

and it's not a membership, it's a subscription.

Yep, not a Membership. TiVo isn't a club (technically), but a service.
You don't have a cable or phone membership do you? (You might if you belong to a co-op though).
VIP was the name of the promotion when the Series 3 launched, where for $199 you could transfer a Product Lifetime (its official name) from another TiVo (the terms were pretty broad on that one) to your Series 3, and get a free year monthly service on your old one. There is a similar offer currently in effect for the TiVoHD, where you can transfer Product Lifetime to a TiVo HD for $199, but provided the Product Lifetime is from a standalone, and activated before October 2003.
