Hello all,
I'm sure this has been addressed in earlier threads, but I just signed up, and I've not found just what I'm looking for..
I was directed to post this question in this forum for some help. I had avoided it because I thought this group might be a little over my head, but here goes:

I've had DirecTV TiVo (standard def) for a few years. Got an HDTV from Santa and checked into upgrading my service to HD. No go. I learned the HD satellites are in a different place in the sky, and I can't get a clear line of sight for the neighbors and the trees. (My home is in a low spot near a creek) So I'm gritting my teeth and going with Time Warner Cable (ugh, I had fired them a long time ago for good reason, I thought.. ) The cable guy will be here to abuse me on Wednesday with an HD DVR. Meantime, I own the DirecTV DVR.. will it be useful for anything? I'm not looking to steal service, violate copyrights, hack code, (To me, "code" is something decyphered by a plastic ring found in a cereal box) or shoot spitwads at the teacher. I just want to save what I have already recorded, and record the occasional standard def program now and again. Thanks for the patience for a newbie and the wisdom!

Without Directv service you will not be able to record anything.

HOWEVER, You will be able to watch content that is already on the tivo. If you were to hack the dtivo you could then use something like tivoserver to transfer content from you computer to the dtivo and watch it like you were doing an MRV. Hope this helps some

Thanks! I'll explore the TiVoServer idea. I guess there's nothing to lose! Have a great weekend!

keep in mind that this only works for the SD tivo, and only if you hack it, and some SD dtivos (r10s) can't be hacked without replacing the prom (at least, there hasn't been a publicly released s/w-only hack for them, yet)
