I have 2 Series 2 Tivos that I bought with lifetime service. A year ago, I bought 2 series 3 Tivos with a special offer that transferred the lifetime service from the old machines to the new machines, while keeping the service active on the old machines for one year.
I never authorized Tivo to charge me for service on any Tivos. I decided to give the old Tivos to my sister, and called a few days before the service expired to make the transfer. The guy told me that if I transferred before the free year was up, I would be charged an early cancellation fee (which makes no sense, since the year was 'prepaid').
So I waited until the old Tivos expired, and today I saw that there were TWO charges for Tivo Service for $12.95 on my credit card, which I had used to initially purchase the Tivos.
I called Tivo, and they said I should have cancelled before the service expired (which, as I said before, would have resulted in a termination fee.)
Either way, I am charged. It is a no-win situation.
They are going to reverse the charges on my credit card, and I cancelled both of the old boxes.
But there are more issues.
1. At the time the unauthorized $12.95 charges were made, I had 4 active Tivos. $12.95 is the full price you pay when you only have one Tivo.
2. It took time and effort to resolve this. The least they could do is offer me some compensation for my frustration, like rewards points. It was a rare warm sunny day in January, and I had planned to be outside.
3. The people I dealt with did not seem interested in preventing this from happening to others.
