Take with a grain of salt......

Friend of mine who works for Comcast has told me that there will be a huge release in New England during the first full week of January. Depending on how that goes will determine how Comcast rolls out Tivo for the rest of the country. But it is still a little buggy. I was 5 minutes into a VOD program and I got a screen asking me if I wanted to change the channel to record a Tivo suggested program. Nothing was recording at the time and I'm not sure if the box was going to record two programs at 9 pm but I found the pop up annoying. It has happened to me before just prior to recording a scheduled recording.

Re NE Comcast rollout from another poster from Derry NH in the same AVS forum.

From what I understand the Media Blitz and full rollout of the Tivo software upgrade is to begin on Monday in the Boston Market.

The closest Boston Market here is about 1000 miles away.

I think the rumors may be legit. I got an email for zip 01913 saying "your wait is over" First such notification direct from Comcast.

Got an email today saying the Comcast DVR is available in my area (03063 - Nashua)

I may just give it a try.

Anyone know if I can pick up the box instead of having a tech come out?

a bunch of folks on the avs forums are reporting that they also got the email today.

Very good sign!! Comcast start advertising in the boston area now. Also come out with a Press Release stating the ramp up in rollout in NE.

I also received an email today. My wife called, and install is scheduled for Friday, 1/11. Do they bring a new box, or upgrade the box I have? Thanks!

They first try to upgrade the box you have.

I got an email yesterday saying telling me that I can get tivo comcast now. I have the S3 and I was wondering what are the differences?

The more I read, the more it sounds like Comcast is requiring a truck roll, even for customers who already have a box that should be compatible with the TiVo software. But I've seen comments from a couple customers in various places that seem to suggest that they were able to call and order the TiVo service, then have it downloaded to their box without a visit from a field tech. Is the truck roll absolutely necessary (I guess I should be asking if Comcast feels that it is, because that's obviously what counts)?

I suspect it will depend on the CSR you get. Most of them are apparently indeed imposing the "truck roll necessary" rule.

I'd love to get a CSR that would just download it to the box... everytime the cable guy comes out its a dreadful experience... I haven't called them yet, but I plan to soon, as I just got the email.

Hi:
Not sure if this is the right thread, but I have a Comcast remote that is programmed to control my surround sound receiver, DVD, etc.

I'm about to order Tivo/comcast. Will the Tivo remote control the same components as my Comcast remote or will I need more than one remote?

thanks.

On the Comcast Tivo remote, you get to program the following buttons:
TV Power
TV Input
Volume
Mute

I have the TV Power and TV Input buttons controlling my TV and the Volume and Mute buttons controlling my AV receiver.

Hi:
Thanks! That makes sense.
What about "switching" to other devices connected to my receiver? For example, how would it work with changing my inputs from DVD, Wii, etc? Will the Comcast technician be able to "re program" those? I guess I can ask Comcast also, but I trust folks on this board more than a Comcast technician with my surround sound codes, etc.

I believe you get a Peanut remote, Comcast branded.

If so, you won't be able to control everything like that. It only controls the DVR, then the rudimentary volume and power controls for the TV and Receiver. No "function" buttons for changing the source on the receiver or controlling the DVD player, etc.

You'll need a separate remote or a Universal like the Harmony ones from Logitech, etc. Or maybe your existing cable box remote will work for you. Not sure how some of the Tivo specific controls would be done though.

However, the Peanut's a dream to use. Especially so of the newer Glo version.

I use the Peanut for TiVo usage (95% of TV Viewing is thru TiVo), and my Reciever remote for all other on the rare occasions it's needed.

Also, on either peanut you can program the "TV Power" Button to Power down the TV and the Receiver with the one button press. That's about the extent of it.

There is only one input button, which is labeled "TV Input", but you get to set the TV on/off and the TV Input button separately, so there might be a way to use the button to switch inputs (video & audio) on your receiver.

HI thankis!
I guess I'll check with Comcast to see if they can "re program" the Tivo remote to control what my Comcast remote currently controls....

Or, will they say that I'll need to get someone else to do that?
We'll see!

I've had several problems with my Denon receiver (losing sound) and although I really want the Tivo/Comcast peanut remote and option, if I screw up the works with my surround sound system, I know others in my house will not be happy campers!

I received my e-mail for Comcast about TIVO being available. Not sure if I'm going to get it.

NO 30 sec skip. This is a biggie.

From all post I've seen from TIVO users already, it seems that it's no better that what we have now. The GUI is nicer, but I want functionality. There are a couple of features that I could use, but not worth 3.00mo for them. I can live with what I have already. Unless Comcast comes up with a way to charge us for I-guide, buy making TIVO it's signature software. and charging us more for the old boxes with the old software.

Well, the truck just rolled out of here, and I'm still waiting for my Tivo/DVR. Seems that the only instruction on the work order that the guy got was "UPGRADE". He assumed it was a phone service upgrade, and that's what he showed up with. When I told him "No, I ordered the Tivo upgrade" his jaw dropped and he apologized about 50 times. He showed me his handheld device, and it only read "UPGRADE" next to my name. He didn't have a Tivo box in his truck, so he called in, and someone will return Tuesday. Hopefully with the right parts. :(

The Comcast tech came back today (same guy) along with another tech who had bit more experience with Tivo installs. They brought with them a DCH3416, but didn't need it. I have a DCT3412, and they thought that maybe it could be upgraded, and it turns out they were right. They called in to the office, and a download to the box started. It took about 30 minutes to complete, and once the remote setup was done, all seems to work well. All my previously recorded programs were there, although grouping them into "folders" doesn't work. Hopefully new recordings will. Even my Harmony 670 still works with the dvr functions. I'll play with it more tonight.

IMHO, you made a mistake in not taking the 3416. 40 more GB would seem useful to me!

We don't record all that much, and we had a few special shows saved that we would've lost had we opted for the new box, so staying with the 3412 is ok with me.

HD eats up a lot of space. You can never have enough GB's if you ask me.
