I have searched for this answer unsuccesfully (must be using wrong search words!)-- and I am sure that it has been asked before- How can I determine how much free space I have left on my hard drive (either in bites- or in hours)?
Thanks-- and Happy New Year

Leave TiVo Suggestions enabled. Then count up the size of the programs in TiVo Suggestions.

Or use Tivoplaylist.

If you want suggestions in and of themselves, then enable them. But there is no need to use Suggestions if you don't want them in the first place.
There is a Recently Deleted Folder at the bottom of the Now Playing list. As you delete recordings, they get sent there. It will fill up until your disk is full (recordings+deleteds=full). The RD Folder can be used to approximate how much space you have left.
This may sound confusing, but once you start using it, it becomes second nature.
A Free Space Indicator should be a feature, but it ain't.

No need for one. the TiVo will automatically delete shows as needed.
And a free space indicator will only tell you the hard drive space. Which tells me nothing. there is no way to know how much space a recording will use. I've had hour long HD shows at 1080i take as little as 4GB and as much as 8.5 GB. the same goes for SD. The amount of space each program uses is all over the place.

Which is what people want to predict.

I'd settle for the "your drive is x% full" that my Motorola DVR had.

Yes, and some of us don't WANT the Tivo to delete ANY show on its own. I have recently started making most of my recordings keep until I delete since I have lots of tuners now.. but it would still be useful to have a free space indicator so that I can know that I should delete (or transfer between my S3 & Tivo HD) to make room.
My Toshiba XS32 tells me right now that there is 5:01 free at my current recording level. Tivo could very easily tell me just that. Long ago I realized that Tivo will likely never add this feature, and it admittedly *does* become more confusing with the plethora of HD bit rates... But you should not presume that those of us who want this feature don't have valid reasons for wanting that information.

Also, certain scheduled recordings reserve disk space, so that space is not available for other recordings. So a meaningful free-space indicator would have to be smarter than just the file system free-space value. And people disagree on exactly what that algorithm should be.
