Just purchased my brand new Series 3 TiVo. I have one question as I wait to get my cards and get it going.
Are you able to copy programs to your PC with a series 3, if they are in HD, and then burn them to a DVD with your burner?
Thanks!

They won't be in HD anymore, but yeah, you can do it. Recommend VideoReDo TVSuite
Not all shows are transferable to your PC.

Creating DVDs with TiVoToGo: Three Easy Steps
Automatically download recordings to PC in MPEG2 format with Dolby Digital 5.1.

Free Tivo Desktop (http://www.tivo.com/mytivo/domore/tivotogo/windows.html) application pictured. Alternatively, you can use a web browser as seen here (http://mysite.verizon.net/~fiosdvr/tivoweb.png).
Automatically remove commercials using VideoRedo TVSuite.

Red areas are deleted commercials. Note the "Create DVD" button at the bottom right.
Burn commercial-free to DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1.

I like this approach because quality is 100% identical to the original broadcast on SD recordings, and much better on HD recordings. You also preserve the original Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.
You can download a 14-day trial of VideoRedo TVSuite here (http://www.videoredo.net/beta/VideoReDoTVS-3-1-4-549.exe).

I've actually had the plus a whole ago, but that was on a different computer. Now I don't have the code anymore to unlock it. I've e-mailed them to try and see if there is anything they can do. I don't have the order number anymore and I tried my credit cards.
Hopefully they can help em some way so I don't have to purchase it again.

Again, for occasional burns, Nero Vision Express 3(NVE3) works fine for S3 and Tivo HD hd recordings. As with VideoRedo, it will be downconverted to a very high quality SD(720x480).
NVE3 oem software is included with some dvd burners.

Why only occasional burns?

The "Plus" version just adds conversion for portable media players, plus the ability to send more video formats to the TiVo.

Cause it sux to use. :D

No automated functions. Commercial removal is relatively tedious (compared to VRD). I only want to burn a show every now and then so NVE3 has been fine for me so far.
If commercial removal is not so important for you, then free NVE3 is that much more invaluble.

...and this is not a complaint, just an observation.
The HD program I transferred to my computer was slow to edit.
It was like maybe too much info for the program to handle.
The commercial free output (saved to computer) was ~6 gigs.
It would be a major transcode to put that one 42 minute show onto a DVD+/-R 4.7g disk.
What if I wanted to put 4 eps on one disk? I can't imagine how long that would take, or what its quality would be like.

Transcoding undoubtably does take time. NVE3, maybe 2x realtime(probably very processor dependent-faster processor, faster transcode?). Obviously, since you have HD transcoded to SD, there is quality loss, but at least with NVE3, you end up with about the best looking SD I've seen. Surely also with VRD.

If you read the source recording from one hard drive and save to another, that can literally double performance (i.e. cut time by half). If you have a RAID, that can improve performance even more.
Encoding with VideoRedo TVSuite takes advantage of SSE2 and multi-core processors. If you have a dual-core or quad-core processor, things should go much faster than if you have a single-core. Tomshardware has a CPU chart showing the relative encoding performance of different CPUs (http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=946&model2=882&chart=431).
With many common tasks day, CPU performance doesn't really matter. Word processing and web browsing is pretty fast regardless of whether you have an Athlon XP @ 1.8GHz or an Intel Core2 Duo @ 3.0GHz. The same is not true for high-definition video editing and encoding.
Make sure you have the latest version (http://www.videoredo.com/en/Download.htm?download=tvsuite) of VideoRedo TVSuite (v3.1.4.549) because they continue to improve performance.

I'll take a Qmaster cluster and Compressor running on a rack full of Xserves :)
Now I just need to figure out how to pay for it..
