I'm not exactly a newbie, but do have some confusion about a few things.

I've had a Tivo series 2 for several years, and used it with cable. It is connected via USB to my network, where I can access it with the Tivo desktop and related tools.

A few months ago, we switched to Directv. We only got the standard receivers initially. I've found it very problematic using the IR control with the DTV IRD. Sometimes the channel change process fails, and we get bogus recordings. That will drive your wife crazy if she misses a show! Plus, this seems like a band-aid having to use that IR cable.

To help with this problem, today I decided to order an upgraded Directv receiver with the DVR built in. Not the HD variety either.

So now I'm doing some research and find that this new DVR receiver that arrives in a few days will not support networking at all. I had hoped to download some shows to the new Ipod we got for Xmas. Also, I wanted to keep the old Tivo around for MRV purposes. Sounds as if this was a bad move. I have no idea what model DTV will be sending, but my guess is that model cannot be hacked with the Zipper. The DTV website just says "Directv Plus DVR", not even sure what model that is. Am I correct to worry about this?

Starting to think now that maybe I should concentrate on getting that IR control to work with the old Tivo and send the new DTV DVR back.

Any thoughts from the veterans?

The DirecTV DVR is not a TIVO unit so I cannot tell you what to expect, except to say that TIVO is the way to go. Many people hate the DirecTV DVR. Apparently DirecTV did a bad job designing their own DVR.
