It seems like such a no-brainer--there must be a reason, but I've never been able to find out. Does anybody know, or is this just sheer corporate stupidity?

Who knows? I've given up trying to figure out why some DVDs are released and some aren't.

They're waiting for the blipvert-encoding process to mature.

A set will be released once we get 20 minutes into the future.

It's #1 on my DVD wish list, now that Young Indiana Jones has been released. Hopefully it'll get released someday, but until then I gotta lot of other teevee to watch...

My guess would be there's some conflict over the rights. There's no doubt a DVD would sell. Interestingly, they've revived him for some commercials in the UK.

It's always going to be some sort of legal wrangling. Otherwise it would have been released by now.

In addition to Eureka, Matt Frewer plays a main role in Intelligence and will be in Watchmen. Better than nothing I suppose.

Well, no doubt in your mind. It wasn't a big hit, otherwise it would have lasted more than 14 episodes.
But here's somebody selling it on DVD. :)

So, do they think that this is some sort of legal disclaimer?
Again these movies and TV shows are NOT available on commercial DVDs and are believed to be in Public Domain. If we have listed a collection by mistake that does not meet this criteria please notify us right away and we will remove the material right away.
They ship through USPS. Is it mail fraud to ship pirated copies through USPS?

GregFirefly was also a niche show that didn't get great ratings, and the movie wasn't that great a success either.
Yeah, yeah, there's the argument that Fox didn't give it a chance, f'd with it, moved it around, etc. But the core base of Whedon fans (the BTVS viewers) didn't move with the show.
Hell, I gave the set to my Brother for Christmas last year (2006), and he's just getting around to watching them NOW. And he was a huge Buffy fan.
Max Headroom wasn't NEARLY as good as Firefly.

wmbrine notwithstanding, the thing they have in common is VERY devoted fans. Not necessarily huge numbers, but certainly enough to make a DVD set worth publishing.
Which is why I suspect there's more to the lack of a Max Headroom DVD set than the studios just not getting around to it.

Hmmm ... just did a Google search and came up with this:
http://www.amazon.com/Max-Headroom-Minutes-Into-Future/dp/B00005JNU5
Availability: NOT YET RELEASED: The studio is currently not producing this title, but to be notified when it is available, enter your e-mail address at right. You'll also be voting for this release; we'll let the studio know how many customers are waiting for this title.
Since when does Amazon carry something that doesn't even exist yet?

Which is why I suspect there's more to the lack of a Max Headroom DVD set than the studios just not getting around to it.Firefly is just more recent. I doubt there's more to it than that. New stuff comes out on DVD right away; old stuff is catch as catch can. New stuff is already made with the expectation that it will come out on DVD; old stuff may have to renegotiate rights. Sales of new stuff can benefit from recent fans and marketing; for old stuff, the studios have to hope that the fans are still hanging on.
Of course I was always amazed that Max Headroom aired at all, given its take on television, advertising, etc.

wmbrine notwithstanding, the thing they have in common is VERY devoted fans.Exactly. The Neilson's can't differentiate between people who plan their day around a show coming on and those that have a show on while they are making supper. Just because a show has better ratings, doesn't mean it will sell better as a DVD. The original Star Trek lasted 3 years. Facts of Life lasted 27 seasons (I may be exaggerating). I don't think there's any doubt which DVD set is generating more money.

A couple of years ago, a Japanese distributor acquired the rights to the original film 20 Minutes Into the Future, and distributed that on DVD. It has an English soundtrack, and still shows up as available on Amazon Japan. Unfortunately, an article reviewing the DVD (http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2007/01/29/live-and-direct-from-japan-its-m-m-max-headroom/) says that Warner Brothers (as of last Janurary, at least) still has no plans for a DVD release of either the film or the series.

Unfortunately, prior to the mid-90s TV shows weren't produced with the idea of releasing them on home video, so the rights for home video weren't included in the original contracts with the performers. Usually, renegotiations are routine, but in some case there are holdouts. Use of preexisting music is the worst problem; see the sad case of the hacked up WKRP in Cincinnati releases, with virtually all the music replaced.
