I just bought Toast 8 and an external usb drive so that I can archive some shows from my TivoHD to my Mac mini.

I'm really not that familiar with the Mac yet. Can someone tell me how I can get the transfered shows to go only to the external usb drive and NOT to the mini's small internal drive? Is it possible to run the Toast 8 app strictly from the usb drive?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Rick

I'm not at my computer now, so this is by memory. When you start up the TiVo on the Mac, hold down the Apple key when you open TiVo Desktop from System Preferences. When you do that, you'll see a Video menu appear at the top next to the other two. Click on "Video" and enable the video option. It automatically chooses a folder, but you should be able to select the folder you want to use.

I'm assuming that you can choose the folder on the external USB drive, but I'm not 100% sure how the folder selection works, since my drive has enough room (for now).

Thanks for the help. I was able to create a new folder on the usb drive and will use that. If I can figure out how to do it, I may try to put both the Tivo desktop and Toast 8 apps on the external drive, because that's all I intend to use this drive for.

Thanks again,

Rick

TiVo Desktop is part of the Preferences panel, so you have nothing to install on the other drive. It is a bit confusing. I thought it was a separate program as well, but you will see it when you pull up the same preferences program where you set up your energy saver, mouse settings, video, etc.

Yeah...it is part of the main systems preferences. I'm not sure why Toast 8 doesn't show up in there as well. I'm testing it with a transfer now, and it seems to be working well.

If you want to save ALL your shows to your external drive, just use an alias.

Navigate to your USB drive and create a folder called Tivoshows.

Then make an alias of that directory. The alias will be called "Tivoshows alias".

Drag the alias to your desktop.

Copy any existing shows from your users/tivoshows directory to your new usb/tivoshows directory.

Rename your "tivoshows alias" to simply "tivoshows"

Trash the empty original users/tivoshows directory and drag your new "tivoshows" alias to your users directory

Now, anything that you download to your "tivoshows" directory from toast or other methods will be redirected to your usb/tivoshows directory.

Because it isn't supported by TiVo. It's an easter egg, and I suspect they were planning on supporting it but saw some issues. So they "turned off" the feature without going to the trouble of removing all the code.

Opening the hidden menu in System Preferences is only to enable TiVoToGoBack which is to SEND shows FROM the Mac TO the TiVo.

There's nothing hidden needed to extract shows FROM TiVo.
