Anyone else have poor signal reception from their TiVo wireless adapter? The TiVo and adapter are only about 20 feet (maybe 25 feet) away from the WAP and two bedrooms apart. The TiVo diagnostic screen is showing anywhere from 30% to 50% strength (marginal). Both of my laptops show excellent strength when sitting right next to the adapter.

Strength varies in that range depending on the orientation of the adapter which will be very difficult for me to control since the adapter is in my kids bedroom and subject to a lot of jostling around.

Yes. I get a weak signal from both Linksys and Tivo brand adapters, (I have six), even though they are very close to the actual router.

I'm sure you've done the obvious joustling around by turning the receiver different directions and making the antenna point at various angles.

Counter-intuitively, my best results (into the 55% to 65% range) are when I angle the antenna at right angles to the unit (rather than it pointing straight to the sky) and then turn the whole unit so that the signal has the broadest change to hit it at right angles, rather than turning the unit to "face" the source of the signal or aim the antenna into the direction of the signal.

P.S. When you move the antenna, there is a delay in the new strength registering on the screen. Move the antenna and be sure to wait a minute or so for the numbers to accurately reflect whether you have helped boost the signal or not.

Go into your router and try changing to another channel. You may have interference from other devices or a neighbor that's using the same channel as you.

A weak signal is not always the fault of the adapter. Sometimes the source of the signal is at fault.

A weak signal is not always the fault of the adapter. Sometimes the source of the signal is at fault.Which is why I mentioned that two of my laptops indicate excellent strength from the same location.

Bringer of Light,

More often than not, I really like your signature.....:D

I witnessed mostly the opposite this weekend. After installing a TiVoHD that was given as a gift, we moved the old S2 TiVo, but its wireless adapter (a Netgear) was having major problems picking up the signal in the new location - typically 20-30% signal (sometimes dropping as low as 1%), and unable to make a connection. So we gave it a TiVo branded adapter instead, and the signal jumped to 40-70%, and it connected fine.

You may have a lemon of an adapter, that's my only thought. Or else the card/antennas your laptops have are very good.

... So we gave it a TiVo branded adapter instead, and the signal jumped to 40-70%, and it connected fine. That is a pretty wide range. Less than 50% is marginal. I can get mine in the 60s but to do it I needs to very precisely position/orient the antenna. Any movement from the optimal drops is back below 50% into the marginal zone.
