Stargate -"The Ark of Truth" (2008)

The movie will cover SG-1's attempt to recover the "Ark of Truth", a piece of Alteran technology developed before the Ancients left for the Milky Way. In an attempt to prevent the Ori and their followers rising to power, a device was created that could essentially "brainwash" individuals, for instance Priors, into believing whatever "truth" was programmed into the device. The Ancients' non-interference policy and belief in free will resulted in the device never being used. Even though the promise of Ascension promised by Origin is a lie, the freedom to believe was something the Alterans ultimately decided they did not have the right to restrict.

Ben Browder as Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell
Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson
Amanda Tapping as Col. Samantha Carter
Christopher Judge as Teal'c
Claudia Black as Vala Mal Doran
Beau Bridges as Major General Hank Landry
Tim Guinee as Tomin
Greg Anderson as Prior
Currie Graham as James Merek
Morena Baccarin as Adria
Sarah Strange as Morgan le Fay
Julian Sands as Doci

Runtime: 102 min

This movie will be the conclusion of Stargate SG-1's Ori arc, which began in "Avalon". The Ori storyline was originally expected to continue into SG-1's eleventh season, but the series was cancelled by the Sci-Fi Channel in August 2006. Therefore, the movie's storyline will pick up after "Unending", the SG-1 series finale, but will take place before Stargate Atlantis's Season 4.

Richard Dean Anderson will not return as Maj. Gen. Jack O'Neill, but he will appear in the next SG-1 movie, Stargate: Continuum.

There's a screener out there making the rounds which I've heard isn't complete (not all the special effects are done, etc). So if you want to see it in it's finished state, I guess wait till it premiers. :)

I think they are going to release it on DVD March 11th. I found it on Rapidshare and the quality wasn't the greatest but I watched it ok on my 24" Dell Monitor about half screen size. They always release DVD's on Tuesday. And that's what it says on the D/L of the movie 11th

My son and I watched it and Vala was as good as ever. All in all, it was pretty good. A few of the special effects did not look finished. Is it possible that what we saw (downloaded from somewhere) is not the finished release? (oops just read above about the special effects)

There is a REAL DVD rip of this direct to DVD movie now out on Bittorrent and Usenet. It's complete with all the special effects. Looks like it came from a retail copy.

There was another release a couple of months ago but it didn't have all the special effects and the quality wasn't the greatest.

It is a copy of the "real" thing. Same content and virtually the same quality. But for free. Nothing wrong with buying the retail copy either. Just letting people know it's out there.

Many people will download and watch the ripped version and also purchase the retail version for their Stargate SG-1 DVD collection.

It's an unauthorized copy of the real thing. It's not what I would call "free," it's what I would call a "copyright violation." I'm just saying I prefer to wait a couple of weeks and buy the DVD, thus ensuring that the creative folks behind the movie got fair payment for their work.

I'd rather wait for the real thing. Obviously you disagree.

I've always wondered why studio's/distributers don't move up the release date when something like this happens. The DVD exists, it's out, people are watching it, and while it hasn't been released, it sure has escaped. There were 10,000 people in one bittorrent swarm yesterday, it's available by other methods as well, is being discussed across the internet, and spoilers abound.

Unless it's physically impossible - *move up the release date*. For every person forced to wait for an arbitrarily selected date, some percentage won't wait. While there are many of us who will download, *and* buy it - I doubt that's the majority. Every day that goes by where you can get a pirated copy with the press of a button to watch this evening, but cannot buy a legal copy - amounts to lost revenue.

Unless it's physically impossible - *move up the release date*.
It's pretty close to impossible. Advertising campaigns begin months in advance, and the Sunday newspaper ads are usually printed a couple weeks in advance and have to be placed a couple of weeks before that. The physical objects have to be manufactured, moved to distribution centers, then sent out to the stores so they will arrive on the correct date. Publicity (e.g., reviews) have to be arranged and timed to hit their maximum peak right around the time the item hits the shelves. Releasing pretty much anything physical is a huge operation with wheels that have to be set into motion long before release day, and changing them at the last minute would be a logistical nightmare.

You'd be better off than someone who's never had any introduction to it, but Seasons 9 and 10 are really what lead up to this movie. The second DVD movie due this summer is supposed to be more of a standalone.

I've really wanted to get back into SG-1, but I tried getting back into it a few seasons ago and was totally lost. On a positive note, maybe this summer I can start netflixing the seasons I missed and it'll be like a new TV show for me!

Atlantis has only hinted vaguely at what the milky way galaxy is dealing with. I would avoid Ark of Truth until you see seasons 9 and 10 or at the very least season 10. That might work.

I hope it does not reek like the Babylon 5 direct to DVD movie did.

It doesn't. I didn't see the Babylon 5 DVD movie because so many people said it wasn't that great. Ark of Truth, however, was a satisfying conclusion to the series.

Well, I enjoyed the DVD though to me there were some times when it felt like they were just stretching a tv series to make a movie. It wasn't bad, I just hope the next DVD will fell more like it was meant for the movies.

BTW, anyone catch the trailer for War Games? When I saw that trailer within a few seconds I was like ok, been there, done that, and got the t-shirt (well actually got the DVD not the t-shirt :) ) and thought someone was making a movie similar to War games only to find out it was a sequel which then it made since that it looked like an updated version of the original movie.

One thing I'll always find funny about Stargate is that the can fire off a thousand rounds from P90s but never put a hole in a wall or break a light.

Quick question -- I stopped watching SG-1 somewhere in the second season of the Ori arc but I think I have the DVDs -- is it important to watch the show first or I can just jump into the movie?

I was getting pretty tired of the whole Ori thing and if the movie concludes that story it I will be happy to watch it -- especially if I don't have to sit through the rest of the series to do it.

The movie isn't any better then the last season. If you got tired of the whole Ori thing you'll probably be bored with the movie.

I'll spoiler this but it should be obvious;

We win and the Ori lose. The how isn't any more interesting then the last season.

I also thought the DVD was a stretched out episode of one of the seasons on TV. However, the preview that recapped was spot on, I too had forgotten a great deal of that stuff. The movie does a good job of tying up the ends as they said it would.

This was still WAY better than 75% of the Atlantis episodes.

I thought it was a good episode of SG1 - glad I rented instead of paying $15+.

I really like the ending cast of the series, too bad the writing wasn't that great (certainly a lot better than Atlantis though).

The highlights of the Sci-Fi convention panel were good - on the DVD as an extra.

I'm still unclear on one (two?) point. Are Adria and Morgana (and Oma and Anubis) engaged in an infinite battle in ascended-space, or did they cancel each other out and both (all four) of them just die? We were told that this would conclude the Ori story, so are all the Ori, including Adria truely dead and gone, or could she be resurected sometime for story purposes, as could Anubis, maybe, or not?

I still want to know about the Tollen. Surely SOME of them survived.

I'm looking forward to this one. The story sounds really interesting. It should be really good based on what I've read of its story/plot. Is it certain that this will happen? I thought whether they make the second one was tied to the success of this one.

There is a new series in the works, although I don't know if it's connected to the movie. Stargate: Universe. IIRC (and you know how that's working for me), it is MGM's way of getting out from under Sci-Fi who has too many rights in SG-1 and Atlantis. The new one is supposed to be quite isolated from the others, perhaps for legal reasons.
