View Full Version : What should I do with my old series 1 TiVo?

I recently replaced my series 1 TiVo with the 3rd generation TiVo. A series 2 TiVo goes for $50 on craigslist so I doubt there's much of a chance that I could sell it. I also doubt it makes much sense as a gift as anyone to "someone less fortunate" as whoever gets it is on the hook for monthly payments in order to use it. Any suggestions or should I just throw it out?

You could bronze it like some parents do with their children's old baby shoes. :D
It doesn't seem like it is worth much of anything. If series 2 used are selling for as little as $50, I doubt you will get much of anything for it.
May be easier just to throw it out.

Do keep in mind that many S1s actually work without a subscription fee; that might make it worth something to someone. I cannot count how many times I read messages online from people wanting a DVR that they don't have to pay a monthly fee for. Most of the S2s are paperweights without a subscription, which really helps keep their resale value down.

Series 1s will only work OTA for about another year.
Cable? Who knows? It depends on if your cable company continues to provide analog channels. When/If that stops, the TiVo's cable-ready tuner will be useless.
Of course, there's cable boxes and satellite boxes. If you have one of those a S1 can still control, you're still in the running.
Before you seriously consider throwing it out, please PM me, I may be willing to take it off your hands.

It's pretty much worthless unless it has a lifetime subscription tied to it.

Not true.
S1 TiVos make excellent security video recorders. I know of several that being used that way. They are setup with back-to-back 1hr long "shows" recording to disk.

Unsub'd S1 makes a great video jukebox - record old home movies, etc. If you are not a video purist, you can transfer DVD's to it for later viewing. Can use serial/network access to rename recordings. Can load up with kid's videos and safely store the DVD away.
Just a thought.

Cable companies are required to provide "some sort" of support for older analog TVs through either 2011 or 2012. I'm being very vague admittedly, but I originally thought it meant they had to provide at least OTA stations in analog... but another thread suggested that it might mean the cable company would just provide a free cable box.. still better than nothing.
And as for the person who suggested to throw it out: SHAME ON YOU.
At the very least, it should be taken to an electronics recycling place, which will recycle it for free. There is lead, gold, and other materials they can get out of it.

This is what you were referring to:DUAL MUST-CARRY: The FCC Rules
Under the FCC’s report and order, cable operators will be required from Feb. 18, 2009, to Feb. 17, 2012, to:
- Carry a local broadcaster’s digital signal in analog and digital formats; or,
- Carry the signal only in digital format, provided that all subscribers have the “necessary equipment” (digital set-top boxes) to view the broadcast content.
- Carry the high-definition signal of broadcasters in high-definition format.
