Just got a new HD tv and had some questions for when I upgrade to a HD dvr. I have a directtivo box now. When I upgrade to a HD dvr, the HR21, do I need a phone line to activate or upgrade? I had a phone line to activate the tivo I have now, but got rid of it and just live with the nag screen.
Also does the HR21 get its data over the sat feed or over the phone?
I heard that if I get the HR21 instead of the HR20, that I can not get OTA HD feeds. I live in ontario CA which is near LA. Will I get my HD locals from directv? That way it doesn't matter if I get the HR21. Thanks
Tim

The HR2x does not need a phone line except for PPV purchases right now. In the current software test release the PPV "phone call" can be done over the internet. The software is downloaded over the satellite and no activation call is needed.
The HR2x is just like the DirecTiVo in that it gets all of it's guide data over the satellite.
The HR21 does not have OTA ATSC but the older HR20 does. You can still find HR20 in some B&M stores but are getting very hard to find. DirecTV does carry locals for Los Angeles (I do not which ones as I use OTA) but do not know what locals they consider for Ontario.

so I won't need a phone line at all, that is great. I at least thought I would need it for the initial setup. My wife and I use cell phones, we don't even have a land line. Thanks for the response.
