I have a eMac computer and have not purchased a router. (I just have a phone connection ) I just recently purchase a Nintendo Wii. My question is what is the least expensive way I can connect my two Tivo's and Wii to my computer.

What equipment do I need? I went to Bestbuy and the clerk could not answer any of my questions about a Tivo Router connection.

Thank you

Harris

If you don't currently have a broadband internet connection IE. Cable, DSL, FIOS etc. then you would be wasting your money to buy a router. Routers won't work with dial-up internet.

If you're somewhat network savvy, you could get by with just a switch or hub, but since most routers can be had for the same price as a hub, I'd go that route.

You're router won't share out your dial-up connection to those devices, but it will still allow them a network connection to the others, it will provide a dhcp server to configure all your network addresses, and if you do someday get a high-speed connection, all you will have to do is connect it to your router, and all your devices will have internet connectivity.

I'd recommend a linksys WRT54GL. Wireless N is still a draft standard, anyway. The WRT54GL will cost you $10 more than a WRT54G, but it's worth it. It has twice as much ram, and can be easily upgraded to an aftermarket linux firmware if you should ever want to do more advanced things with it (like turn up the wireless transmit power and see if you can reach a wifi in your area). Either of them have 4 wired ports, and if you want to save the $10, with WRT54G will work ok, too.

I have used a router for my home network just fine, for about a year until I got broadband internet. I used it for my print server (until I got a USB printer), and to connect two PCs together.

I do have a DSL connection. Both of my Tivo's are Toshiba.

Do you want to go wireless? The Wii is wireless by default but you could wire it up if need be

basically any off the shelf router/switch at a retail store will work for TiVo and the Wii. I would pick up a linksys DSL/router that also had wireless G to get good value for the money. I run a cable modem/router from linksys and then have a wireless N router hooked up upstairs.

I will go broadband when FIOS is available. (They told me 6 months) I would prefer to go wireless, but wired is not out of the question.

then find out what wireless/router works with FIOS broadband and get some TiVo Wireless adapters for the Toshibas and you can network your stuff for now and then add broadband when ready

I use a Linksys WRT54GL. It works wirelessly with my Wii, Ps3, and WET54G bridge (which is hooked up to two TiVos). I'm pretty sure the WRT54G works with TiVos as well.

It does, the WRT54G is the one I use for my tivo and wii.

I have a Buffalo Airstation and it works fine with my Toshiba Tivo and Wii and Mac.

Buying a router is not a bad thing but if you are waiting for FIOS be aware that they will be giving you a router with the install. It has 4 wired ports and supports wireless as well.

So you will more than likely abandon the router that folks are telling you to buy now.

I am ready to set up my tivo and I am on step 4 to connnect to the network via phone or ethernet. I have a wii that is wireless by default and a ave wireless lynksys srx 400 g router. I would like to know if there is anyway that I can connect using the wii as a hub for the internet connection? If not, what would be the next best way/inexpensive way. My telephone/network jack is very far away for a hard line.

It sounds like you want a 'wireless bridge' to bridge to your existing router. I was about to ask the same thing -- if anybody knows of cheap ones of these.

There's actually a *1 port* game adapter at Fry's for $19 (after rebate).. So I may actually get that + a cheap switch/router to get my tivos off the phone line.

There *was* a cool Buffalo Technology thing that was a wireless game adapter + 4 port router in one box... But they're in some patent dispute so the only ones left have gone WAY up in price. (It used to be around $50).

I have an airport express works great with iMac, Wii, and Tivo. Totally idiot proof.

You have to be careful with some of those game adapters as they will only allow one device to pass through even if you use a switch, which is why they are cheaper than a true bridge.

I myself have a WET54G, which isn't cheap, but it works very well. You might be able to find it on sale.

My son just gave me his old airport. It is one of the original that looks like a flying saucer. Do you think it will work as well as you say. I have an eMac, verizon DSL and Toshiba Tivos. Do I only need the Tivo sending units?
