View Full Version : HR20 remote sucks! (unless you can tell me how to fix this)

On the remote that came with my HR20 I have to repeatedly hit the volume button to turn the volume up or down on my TV. I can't just hold the button down like I can on the Tivo peanut. This is a big PITA with channels switching back and forth from DD to stereo sounds and the volume differences between them. Any way to fix this?
EtA: If it matters, this is with a Samsung TV.

You could try a different Samsung TV code.
Accross the multiple TV's I have the RC series remotes on (the remote is independent of the receiver)... all of them, I can just hold the volume up/down button and it continues to adjust.

I have a Hitachi tv and I can just hold the volume button to go up or down. No repeated taps here. As Earl suggests perhaps a different Samsung code would do the trick.

Works fine with my Samsung.
I just wish I could get rid of the warning message the remote sends to the DVR to display every time put the slider into a new position to control a component other than the HR20. The extra tap is a pain.

Thanks for the tip Earl. I figured it was a limitation of the remote. I'll give a few other codes a try and cross my fingers.

The older TiVo remotes have this issue. There is a newer code that works correctly, if the remote is newer. Not sure about the HR20, since I use a Harmony, and that controls the volume fine.

Give in... My Harmony remotes have been the best home theater-related purchases that I've made. Far better than the Pronto remotes I had previously (and spent much more money on).
The only thing that frustrates me (and this is more of a frustration with the HR20 than the remote) is the press and hold functions... They're not so easy to use with the Harmony.
Do some research, though. I think you'll find different Harmony remotes are better suited to different things. I've got two 880's and a 550. I greatly prefer the 550 because of the button layout but you may feel differently about it.

I have the 880 and it works fine. However, the button layout does suck, so much so that I programmed the LCD buttons to do the transport functions (luckily the 880 has eight available). Also, the buttons are too close together. I'll keep it for now, but the 550 looks better.

Wow, does anyone actually still use OEM remotes? I've used my MX-500 for Tivo for years. 95%+ of the HR20 buttons mapped over to the same buttons I was using for Tivo. Added the color buttons to the top and it's like I never changed units.

Once the number of pieces of equipment hit four, I got a universal remote. However, make sure you keep the OEM's around.
I love the way you can hit an activity button for watching my HR10 and the remote turns on the appropriate equipment and sets the correct inputs on the AV rcvr and TV.

For repeating volume commands on the samsung tv's, you have to use TV code 10702. The equivalent code in the tivo remotes is 0306.

Definitely try another. I have two Samsung TVs that I thought I had found the code on, but had the same annoyance. Tried another code, and now life is good! :)

Everyone, thanks for the tip on trying a different code. It worked! Now I just need to figure out why my HR20 is recording repeats even though I told it to record first runs only and why it's not deleting multiple episodes of a show that I told it to keep only 1 of. But that's for another thread...

While I have noticed the same thing, it is not limited to the hR20. My HR10 has been doing it more frequently lately too, so I suspect at least some is related to guide issues. While I wish it would not happen, I would rather have it record a repeat then miss a recording. See this thread.

Actually I am having one other problem with this remote. There don't seem to be any codes to get it to control my origional SD DirecTivo. I'd like to set it to AV2. And possibly one for my XBox 360 for when I'm using it as a Media Center Extender. one of the ones listed under Microsoft DVD player turns it on and off and the directional arrows work, but that's about it. Back button doesn't work. Play controls don't work properly.

The only tivo codes are for address zero, they're 01442 & 01142. You're stuck with whatevers mapped via the preset codes, was it dvd 21708 for the xbox?
