View Full Version : Is A TiVo Compatible With DirecTV? How?

Is a TiVo branded series 2 or series 3 machine compatible with DirecTV? If so, what are the limitations - if any? (other than the fact the tuner of the DirecTV would have to be manually set - or would it?) I've already been convinced that the DVRs from DirecTV are substandard when compared with TiVo brand units. P.S.: If TiVo is compatible with DirecTV, would one have to use any special equipment/connections/cablecard devices, and if so, which?

You can hook up a S2 to a DTV receiver. You won't have dual tuner capability via the sat signal, nor will you have HD capabilities. I think the S2 can change the channels on the DTV receiver, but I've never had this setup. I always had DTV/TiVo integrated units.

The S3 and HD will not work with DTV at all. Just not possible.

After getting an HDTV last year, and discovering that there was not a long term option to have DTV, HD, and TiVo, I dropped DTV. I have Comcast and a collection of S3's and HD's. I have been very happy with the switch. I don't miss DTV at all.

The DirecTV/TiVo integrated units - is that what people complain about as not being as good as TiVo standalone units? If not, are these still available new from DirecTV? From what I've read I don't think DirecTV is offering any DVRs made by or licensed by TiVo.

Yes, they don't have Home Media features (i.e. anything that uses the network connection - photos, music, unbox, tivocast, MRV, TTG, etc).

They are no longer available from DirecTV, but can be found second hand on eBay, etc.

The DirecTV/TiVo units don't have any of the networking features, but they are very good DVR's nonetheless. That's what I had and I loved them.

Some folks still prefer them over the newer 'in-house' DTV DVRs, and that's why you see demand for them and second hand availability.

In my case, I just viewed DTV as moving further and further away from TiVo, and that prompted my switch to cable. I never had the networking features while I was with DTV, but now with the S3 and HD units, I have TiVoToGo, TiVoComeBack, Multi-room viewing, TiVoCast, Amazon Unbox, etc, etc. I cannot imagine going back to a DVR without those features. It's almost like going from single tuner to dual tuner for me. Multi-room viewing is heavily used in my household.

The DirecTivo's can easily be hacked to enable most of these features ie. MRV, TTG, Photo and Music by following these simple instructions here http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=265929

In fact according to the information posted on this forum, MRV and TTG works MUCH faster on a DirecTivo's than it does on standalone Tivo's - requiring just 14 minutes to transfer a 1 hour show wirelessly.

Stand alone tivos connect to DirecTV receivers the same way they connect to cable boxes. Everything necessary comes packaged with the tivo.

The substandard DirecTV DVR's that people refer to so often are direcTV receivers with an integrated DVR that is their own, not Tivo's.

We have 2 single tuner S2's hooked up to D* for SD tv's so that is fine!

On our HDTV we have a D* HR20 for HD and it's ok, gets the job done.

Easy to hookup the S2's using the IR Blaster.

No Tivo can get 100 HD channels today. Nothing else is important to me. If you don't care about HD then you have a lot of options.

The TiVo HD and Series 3 TiVo are stand-alone machines and do NOT work with satellite. They're cable/OTA only, but do not work with cable boxes.

For any cable channels beyond unscrambled analog, they require cable cards and digital cable.

TiVos that work with satellite and cable boxes can get as many HD channels as the box is able to get.

The quality will have to be downrezzed to SD, but the TiVo will be able to record the channels.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that someone wouldn't understand that the standard rules apply and miss the fact that the link I provided is for the S2.

And don't send me a PM every freakin' time you respond to one of my posts, you look foolish and it's annoying as all hell. My PM box is not for your pleasure. Because of problems with you in the past, any more PM's from you not specifically asking for my help will be considered harassment.

I got one of these things coming in the mail.

If you want to connect an S2 to a DirecTVs H20 (an HD receiver), this is suppose to work better than IR connection.

You said stand-alone machines can be used with satellite, and that's not entirely true. Some people are new and need to have a full explanation.

Funny you'd be upset I made sure they got it.

As for me sending you a PM, it's not for anyone's "pleasure", but it is there for us to use in civilized, rational communication.

So are the boards.

Also, your membership appears to be two months old.

Four years newer than mine.

How could we have had "problems in the past"?

You and I have had no problems in the past, so stop making out that we have.

Sending a PM that just repeats what you stated publicly is absurd and unnecessary. It makes you look as though you need people to see what you've said just for the the validation. I don't need you wasting my inbox space, you're simply not worth it.

You mean you've already forgotten your newbie diaper comment last month that probably got you a suspension for attacking a "newbie"? You did suddenly disappear that very day and the mods did remove the offending post.

And to help alleviate your ignorance, being new to or a longtime user of this particular forum or any forum has absolutely nothing to do with anyones knowledge and understanding of Tivo the company, their products/policies or even this forum. You've proven that. So the next time you decide to feel superior to a new user by using the "newbie" card, think twice.

To who?

Upset about having had something pointed out to you?

Keep a civil tongue in your head or don't bother to talk to me.

We talk like ladies and gentlemen here, and treat each other with respect.

Respect? like when you mouthed off to me because I was a new forum member and you needed to discuss my need for a diaper because you were calling me a baby? Is that the kind of respect you were referring to? All anyone has to do is look up some of your old posts to see what kind of pain in the butt you are and that you take pleasure in it.

and BTW - why did you have to send this to me as a PM not once but twice?
That takes brains.

Nobody called you a baby, nor was it ever said you needed a diaper.

A simple explanation was given to a new person, and someone then asked "did you REALLY feel that was needed?"

I replied that yes, it was needed, since everyone needs to learn and grow. I also made the point that most people don't complain their parents taught them...

...let's say "certain things" that are expected of us all, things that the newborn don't know, and yet an individual needs to learn in order to get along.

There was absolutely NOTHING wrong with using that illustration, even if it apparently went over one or two heads.

You're over-reacting, and making a mountain out of a molehill.

I suggest that you calm down and learn to get along here.

We treat each other with respect here, and anything else can't be tolerated.

Filling in gaps where knowledge is concerned and trying to make sure someone else is coming up to speed doesn't constitute disrespect.

Misrepresenting the facts regarding a situation most certainly does, however.

Now, is it all right with you if we get back to helping others learn more about using TiVo, and stop with embarassed complaints over someone filling in gaps left in an earlier reply?

Just don't send PMs with your response to people every time you respond to them.
