need help upgrading TivoWebPlus for series 1 standalone

I need help trying to access my Philips Series 1 standalone.
I want to upgrade TivoWebPlus to the latest (stable) version.
The problem is that I cannot connect to my Tivo to make the update.
I cannot FTP to it even though I can FTP to non-local sites with no problem.

1. How do I FTP to my Tivo? What port or firewall settings do I need to check?
2. I'm not very familiar with Unix (but learning). Is there an easier way to upgrade TivoWebPlus than the directions provided on their site?

It sounds like you need a primer in basic TiVo hacking -- I suggest looking at Steve Jenkins site (http://tivo.stevejenkins.com/).
